Create distinct browsing profiles in Safari on Mac

You can keep your personal browsing separate from your work, school, and other browsing by creating a profile for each part of your life.

Three Safari profile windows: one for personal use, one for work, and one for school.

Open Safari for me

Create a profile

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Profiles.

If this is your first profile, click Start Using Profiles.

  3. Click the Add button below the profiles list.

If this is your first profile, you can skip this step.

  4. Enter a name for this profile, then choose an icon and color.

  5. Choose a bookmarks folder for your favorite websites in this profile.

  6. Click Create Profile.

  7. Click Extensions to select the ones you want to use with this profile.

In addition to any profiles you create, you always have a Personal (Default) profile. You can change the name, icon, and color of your Personal profile.

Note: If you store passwords with iCloud Keychain, the passwords are available in any profile you create.

Switch to another profile

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose File > New Window > New [profile name] Window.

Edit a profile

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Profiles.

  3. Select the profile in the list.

  4. Make your changes.

Delete a profile

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Profiles.

  3. Select the profile in the list.

  4. Click the Delete button below the profiles list.

When you delete a profile, you erase the tabs, history, and website data associated with the profile, and you close all websites open in the profile. Favorites folders are preserved (unless empty).
