Browse, import, and save key commands in Logic Pro for Mac

Once you open the Key Commands window, you can browse or search for key commands.

You can also switch between key command sets, or import and export them. This is useful if you need to work temporarily on another user’s Logic Pro system, because you can use your personal key commands without altering the settings of the other system.

Browse key commands

In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

  • To show or hide all key commands in a key command group: Click the disclosure arrow next to that group.

  • To show or hide the key commands of all key command groups: Do one of the following:

    • Option-click the disclosure arrow next to any key command group.

    • Click the Action pop-up menu  in the top left of the Key Commands window, then choose Expand All. To hide all key commands, choose Collapse All.

    When you expand key command groups, your key command selection may no longer be visible. You can quickly return to the selected key command by clicking the Action pop-up menu, then choosing Scroll to Selection.

  • To filter the list of key commands: Click one of the following filter buttons:

    • All button: Show all key commands.

    • Used button: Show only assigned key commands.

    • Key button: Show only key commands assigned to the keyboard.

    • Touch Bar button: Show only key commands assigned to the Touch Bar.

    • Unused button: Show only unassigned key commands.

    • Customized button: Show only user-customized key commands.

    • Multi-Used button: Show only key commands used in multiple windows.

    • Conflicts button: Show only key commands that conflict with other key commands.

    • Pressed button: When the Pressed button is engaged, pressing a key combination on the keyboard shows all key commands that use the pressed key.

Search for a key command

  • In Logic Pro, enter a search term in the search field.

You can click the Clear button to the right of the search field to clear the search term. To use a previous search term, click the magnifying glass icon to the left of the search field, then choose a search term from the pop-up menu. To clear all previous search terms, click the magnifying glass, then choose Clear from the pop-up menu.

Choose a key command set

In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

  • Choose Logic Pro > Key Commands > Presets.

  • Click the Action pop-up menu  in the top left of the Key Commands window, then choose Presets.

The default key command sets, along with the custom key command sets, are displayed, allowing you to quickly switch between key command sets.

Import a key command set

  1. In Logic Pro, click the Action pop-up menu  in the top left of the Key Commands window, then choose either of the following:

    • Import Key Commands: Overwrites all key commands in the Key Commands window with the key commands you import.

    • Import Key Commands to Selection: Overwrites only the selected key commands in the Key Commands window with the key commands you import.

    • Merge Key Commands: Overwrite only the key commands in the Key Commands window with the key commands that have custom assignments in the key command set that you select from the dialog.

  2. In the dialog that appears, choose the key command set you want to import.

Save a key command set

  • In Logic Pro, click the Action pop-up menu  in the top left of the Key Commands window, then choose any of the following:

    • Save: Saves all key commands and their assignments to the currently loaded key command set.

      The Preset submenu in the Action pop-up menu indicates the currently loaded key command set with a checkmark.

    • Save As: Opens a dialog that lets you save the current key commands to a new key command set.

      The default location is ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Key Commands/, but you can navigate to any location on your computer to save the key command set.

    • Save Customized Key Commands As: Opens a dialog that lets you save a new key command set that contains only key commands that have a custom assignment.

Export key commands to a spreadsheet

You can use a spreadsheet to create a list of key commands and their assignments.

  1. In Logic Pro, click the Action pop-up menu  in the top left of the Key Commands window, then choose Copy Key Commands to Clipboard.

    Now you can use the standard paste command (Command-V) in a spreadsheet application to create a list of those key commands and their assignments.

  2. In a spreadsheet application, open a blank spreadsheet, then press Command-V to paste the copied key commands into the spreadsheet.

Tip: You can use the search field in the Key Commands window to search for a term and then export only the key commands that match that search term.
