Change Language & Region settings on Mac

On your Mac, use Language & Region settings to select the languages shown in the Finder and in apps, and choose the formats used to show dates, times, numbers, and more.

To change these settings, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Language & Region on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)

Option

Description

Preferred Languages

View the languages you want shown in macOS and in apps (for example, in menus and messages), and on websites (if available in a preferred language).

If macOS or an app supports the primary language, that language is used. If not, the other languages are used, in the order listed. You can drag languages in the list to reorder them. See Change the language your Mac uses and If non-Latin fonts don’t appear correctly.

If you add input sources, those languages are automatically added to the list.

Add , Remove

Add and remove languages in the list.

Apply to Login Window

When your Mac has multiple users, everyone sees the language you chose as the primary language in the login window. Choose this option from the Settings pop-up menu below the languages list.

Note: If the Settings pop-up menu doesn’t appear, it means the login window is already set to use the primary language.

Region

Choose the geographic region whose formats are used for dates, times, numbers, and currencies.

When you choose a different region, the options and the preview shown change.

Calendar

Choose the type of calendar used to display dates and times.

Temperature

Select the preferred temperature format.

Measurement system

Select the preferred measurement system.

First day of week

Choose the first day of the week.

Date format

Choose the date format, such as day, then month, then year.

Number format

Choose the format for numbers, such as when a comma appears.

List sort order

Choose the sort order for names.

This option is available only for some primary languages.

Term of address

Choose your preferred term of address (feminine, masculine, or neuter) to make your device feel more personal. Turn on “Share with all applications” so that all apps personalize how they address you.

These options are available for these supported languages.

Live Text

Select text in images to copy or take action. See Interact with text in a photo using Live Text in Photos.

Applications

View the list of apps you set to use a language other than the default language.

Add , Remove

Add and remove apps in the list. When you remove an app from the list, it uses the default language.

To choose a different language for an app in the list, select the app, then choose a language from the pop-up menu.

Translation Languages

Select languages to download to your computer so you can translate when offline. You can also process translations on your Mac, even when connected to the internet. See Translate text.
