Send recorded audio messages on iPhone

You can use the Messages app to record and send audio messages. Audio messages are automatically deleted to save space on your device, but if you want to save them, you can.

Note: Audio recording is available only when you and your recipients are signed in to iMessage.

Record and send an audio message

Instead of writing a text message, you can record an audio message that can be played right in the Messages conversation.

  1. In a Messages conversation, tap the Apps button to show the app icons below the text field (if necessary).

  2. Tap the Audio Recording button, then do one of the following:

    • Record and review a message before sending: Tap the Record button to record, then tap it again to stop recording. Tap the Play button to review, then tap the Send button to send the recording or the Cancel button to cancel.

    • Record a message and send it immediately: Hold the Record button while you record your message, then release to send.

  3. Tap Keep to save an incoming or outgoing audio message on your device.

    Otherwise, the recording is deleted from the conversation—on your device only—2 minutes after you send or listen to it. Recipients can play your recording any time after they receive it, and then they have 2 minutes to save the message by tapping Keep.

    Tip: If you always want to keep audio messages, go to Settings  > Messages > Expire (below Audio Messages), then tap Never.

To make an audio or video call instead of sending a message, you can switch to FaceTime . In a Messages conversation, tap the FaceTime button.

Listen or reply to a recorded audio message

When you receive an audio message, you can just raise your phone to your ear to listen to it. You can also raise your phone to send an audio reply.

  1. To play incoming audio messages, raise your iPhone up to your ear.

  2. To reply with an audio message, lower your iPhone, then raise it to your ear again. After you hear a tone, record your response. Lower your phone, then tap the Send button to send the audio message.

You can also turn off this feature so that you listen to and record audio messages only when you tap buttons (not in response to moving the phone). Go to Settings  > Messages, then turn off Raise to Listen.
