Set the channel strip input format in Logic Pro for Mac
The channel strip input format determines the mono, stereo, or surround status of the channel strip. You set the input format using the Channel Mode button.
The symbol on the Channel Mode button indicates the input status:
Mono: One circle represents a mono input format. The level meter shows a single column.
Stereo: Two interlocked circles represent a stereo input format. The level meter divides into two independent columns when a stereo input format is chosen.
Left: Two circles, with the left one filled, indicate a left channel input format. The channel strip acts as a mono channel strip with only the left channel of a stereo audio file played back. The level meter shows a single column.
Right: Two circles, with the right one filled, indicate a right channel input format. The channel strip acts as a mono channel strip with only the right channel of a stereo audio file played back. The level meter shows a single column.
Surround: A square with five dots indicates the surround channel input format. The level meter divides into multiple linked columns (the number matches the project surround format) when the surround input format is chosen.

Surround format indicator
Logic Pro shows a surround format indicator for audio files and audio regions when you’ve recorded audio with the project set to that surround format. When you import an audio file, the file shows what surround format it was recorded in. A square icon indicates that the file was recorded in surround, and dots along the square indicate the ear-level speaker position for that specific format. Height speakers (as in a 7.1.4 format) are not shown. Next to the icon is the name of that surround format—for example, Quad, 5.1, or 7.1.4. You can see this indicator in two places:
Project Audio Browser: The info column for the audio file shows the surround format indicator next to the sample rate and bit depth.
Track lane: The region header shows the surround format indicator next to the region name.
Choose the channel strip input format
Click and hold the Channel Mode button on the channel strip, then choose an input format from the pop-up menu.
