Adjust a range of automation points in Logic Pro for Mac

In Logic Pro for Mac, you can adjust multiple automation points at once by selecting them first and then moving them as a group. The group of automation points is displayed as a range selection on the automation track, indicated by a gray area between the first and last selected automation points. You can also create multiple selections on the automation curve to adjust a group of non-adjacent automation points at once.

Dragging a group of automation points horizontally changes their position on the timeline. As a default, dragging them vertically moves all selected points up or down equally by the same amount.

The automation trim field in the track header lets you adjust the entire automation curve on an automation track vertically without creating any selection.

Note: If the track is part of a mixer group, the track automation data for the group adjusts in accord with the automation parameter you set in the Group Setting window. See Automate groups.

Select an automation range

With Logic Pro in automation mode, create one or multiple range selections on the automation track by doing any of the following:

  • Drag left or right across the automation track to select all automation points in that range.

  • Press and hold the Shift key and drag another selection to create additional ranges.

  • Shift-click multiple adjacent automation points to create a range from the first to the last selected point.

    The selected automation points and the line between them change to a white color, and the range selection appears as a gray bar on the timeline.

  • Shift-click multiple non-adjacent automation points.

Note: Unselected automation points in a selection range are not affected when you adjust the selection vertically or horizontally.

Click in the automation track background to deselect all automation points.

Adjust the time positions of a group of automation points

  1. With Logic Pro in automation mode, create a range selection on the automation track.

  2. Drag horizontally to move the time position of the selected automation points in that range by doing any of the following:

    • Drag one of the selected automation points.

    • Drag a segment of the selected automation curve.

    • Drag the background of the range selection.

    Once you start dragging horizontally, you cannot move the points vertically (until you release the pointer) to avoid changing their values inadvertently.

Adjust the values of a group of automation points

  1. With Logic Pro in automation mode, create a range selection on the automation track.

  2. Drag vertically to adjust the values of the selected automation points in that range by doing any of the following:

    • Drag one of the selected automation points.

    • Drag a segment of the selected automation curve.

    • Drag the background of the range selection.

    In Absolute mode, all selected automation points are moved up or down by the same amount.

Tip: Tip: Press and hold the Control key while dragging vertically to make finer adjustments.

Adjust the entire automation curve vertically

  • With Logic Pro in automation mode, after making your selection, place the pointer over the numerical display in the track header (the parameter value changes to Trim), then drag vertically to change the value (the offset or trim amount).

    When you adjust a range of automation points, the relative differences in their values are retained. If the value of any of the automation points reaches the minimum or maximum value, none of the values can be adjusted further. You can override this behavior by holding the Option key while dragging.

    Tip: If the Trim field is not visible, position the pointer over the line dividing the track headers from the left edge of the tracks, then (when you see the Resize pointer) drag the line left or right to resize the track headers.

When you release the mouse, the numerical display reverts to showing the value of the active automation parameter at the playhead position.
