Move and resize chords in Logic Pro for Mac

You can move and resize chords, both on the Chord track and on Session Player regions. When you move a chord, it keeps its length, and any preceding or following chords resize if needed to accommodate the moved chord.

When you move a chord so that it is completely within the boundaries of another chord, the other chord is in effect split into two chords, remaining in place and filling the space before and after the moved chord.

When you resize a chord, the preceding and following chords also resize to accommodate the length of the resized chord. When you resize a chord so that it completely overlaps another chord, the overlapped chord is overwritten.

You can also resize chords in a chord group on the Chord track.

Move chords

  • In Logic Pro, select a chord, then drag it to the left or right to a new position.

    For shorter chords, be sure to position the pointer in the middle of the chord when you drag, so that you don’t inadvertently resize the chord.

Note: Moving a chord on the Chord track so that it overlaps an existing chord can overwrite the overlapped part of the existing chord. If you overwrite part of an existing chord, you can resize it to its original length.

Move a chord or chord group in the ruler when the Chord track is hidden

  • In Logic Pro, Command-drag the chord or chord group left or right to a new position.

    For shorter chords, be sure to position the pointer in the middle of the chord when you drag, so that you don’t inadvertently resize the chord.

Resize chords

  1. In Logic Pro, move the pointer over the lower-left edge or the lower-right edge of the chord.

    The pointer becomes a Resize pointer.

  2. Drag the edge of the chord to shorten or lengthen it.

When you lengthen a chord from its right edge, the chord extends for the amount of time you lengthen it. When you lengthen a chord from its left edge, the beginning of the chord keeps the same position, but a new instance of the same chord extends to the left for the amount of time you lengthen the region. This keeps the start of any strumming pattern, arpeggio, fill, or other motion in the part playing the chord in the same position so that it aligns with other tracks in the project.

Note: Resizing a chord on the Chord track so that it overlaps an existing chord can overwrite the overlapped part of the existing chord. If you overwrite part of an existing chord, you can resize it to its original length.
