Manage shapes and collections in Pixelmator Pro on Mac

The Shape tool includes hundreds of shapes, organized by category, and ranging from simple geometric forms to food, plants, animals, and more. You can save custom shapes and shape collections of your own to the shape browser. You can also import and export custom shapes and collections.

Save a custom shape

  1. In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, select a shape layer in the Layers sidebar.

  2. Click the Shape button in the Tools sidebar, then in the Shape pane, click The disclosure arrow at the top to open the Shapes browser.

  3. Do either of the following:

    • Click the Add button next to any category name (Basic, Activities, Food, and so on) to save the selected shape to that category.

    • Drag the shape layer from the Layers sidebar to the Shapes browser. The custom shape is saved in the location you drag it to.

Create a new shape collection

  1. In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, click the Shape button, then in the Shape pane, click the pop-up menu at the top to open the Shapes browser.

  2. Click New Collection at the bottom.

  3. Enter a custom name in the text field, then press Return.

Import, export, and customize shape presets and collections

After you create a preset or a preset collection, you can rename, redefine, or share them with others.

  1. In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, click the Shape button in the Tools sidebar, then in the Shape pane, click the pop-up menu at the top.

  2. In the Shapes browser, do any of the following:

    • Export a shape: Drag a shape from the list of shapes onto the desktop or into a Finder window to export a .shapes file.

    • Export a shape collection: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then click the More button, and choose Export.

A .shapes file is created containing the shape category collection.

    • Export your entire shape library: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then Option-click the More button, and choose Export All. A .shapes file is created containing all of the shape category collection.

    • Import a shape: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then click the More button, and choose Import. Select a .shapes file.

The shape is added to the category collection.

    • Import a shape collection: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then click the More button, and choose Import. Select a .shapes file.

The shape collection is added to the library.

    • Rename a shape collection: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then click the More button, and choose Rename. Enter a new name for the collection, then press Return.

    • Remove a shape preset: Control-click a shape in the browser, then choose Remove.

    • Remove a shape collection: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then click the More button, and choose Remove.

    • Reset the shapes library: Move the pointer over a category name in the browser sidebar, then Option-click the More button, and choose Reset All.

Resetting the shapes library restores default shapes and collections and removes any custom shapes you’ve added.

Important: If you want to use custom shapes created in an earlier version of Pixelmator Pro (Pixelmator Pro 3.7 or earlier), you must export them from the earlier version, then import them into Pixelmator Pro 4.
