Track-based vs. region-based automation in Logic Pro
Logic Pro offers two types of automation: track-based automation and region-based automation. Track-based automation can be applied to the entire track, from the beginning to the end of your project. Region-based automation applies only to the specific region the automation parameters are connected to. With track-based automation, if you re-record, move, or copy regions (either to another point on the same track or to another track entirely) the automation data remains tied to the initial point on the track in which it was created. However, with region-based automation, if you re-record the region, the automation is lost; if you move or copy the region (either to another point on the same track, or to another track) the automation remains with the region. Region-based automation is particularly useful when you are automating instrument parameters.
When using region-based automation with instrument tracks and Drummer tracks, you can also automate MIDI data for individual notes. In addition, you can also convert track-based automation to region-based automation and vice versa.
Note: In previous versions of Logic Pro, MIDI Draw was used to automate MIDI data for individual notes. Region-based automation includes all the functionality of MIDI Draw.
Convert between types of automation
In Logic Pro, choose one of the following commands from the Mix > Convert Automation submenu:
Convert Visible Track Automation to Region Automation: Converts displayed track-based automation to region-based automation.
Convert Visible Region Automation to Track Automation: Converts displayed region-based automation to track-based automation.
Convert All Track Automation to Region Automation: Converts all track-based automation to region-based automation, regardless if it is currently visible onscreen.
Convert All Region Automation to Track Automation: Converts all region-based automation to track-based automation, regardless if it is currently visible onscreen.
Note: These commands all have assignable key commands as well.
