Spatial Audio Monitoring in Logic Pro for Mac

You can use the Spatial Audio Monitoring plug-in to check your surround mix in the Apple Renderer binaural formats or on built-in computer speakers that support Spatial Audio.

Note: To use the Spatial Audio Monitoring plug-in, you must have macOS Monterey 12.3 or later installed. The Apple Renderer (Head Tracking) monitoring format requires a Mac with Apple silicon.

Figure. Spatial Audio Monitoring window with Apple Renderer selected, showing the four Apple Renderer buttons.

To insert the plug-in, click the Audio Effect slot in the surround master channel strip, then choose Imaging > Spatial Audio Monitoring from the plug-in pop-up menu. If you have other plug-ins on the surround master channel strip, insert the Spatial Audio Monitoring plug-in in the last empty Audio Effect slot.

Choose one of the following formats from the Monitoring Format pop-up menu:

  • Monitoring Format pop-up menu: Select an option to monitor your surround mix in a binaural format on headphones or on built-in computer speakers that support Spatial Audio.

    • Apple Renderer: This is the headphone virtualization used by Apple Music and Apple TV to render a binaural Spatial Audio mix for playback on headphones. Using this monitoring option lets you listen to your surround mix the way it sounds when played on Apple Music or Apple TV using your headphones.

When this option is selected, the following four buttons appear that let you further configure the Apple Renderer playback:

      • Head Tracking button: Click the Head Tracking button  to turn on head tracking, which creates the impression that the sound field of your three-dimensional mix remains fixed in place when you move your head from side to side. This simulates the “real-life” situation where the direction of sound sources (for example, your speakers) stay in place independent of your head movement. This option is only available when head tracking–capable headphones or earbuds are selected as the output device in the Audio Devices settings. Head tracking is turned off when bouncing with this format.

The Bluetooth-enabled headphones or earbuds transmit any movement of your head to the renderer, which updates the three-dimensional sound field in real time so that any signal, regardless of the wearer’s head movement, remains in its virtual location when listened to over headphones.

      • Personalized Spatial Audio Profile button: Click the Personalized Spatial Audio Profile button  to switch the headphone virtualization from Standard Spatial Audio profile to your Personalized Spatial Audio profile that optimizes your immersive sound experience on headphones.

To use this option, you must first create a Personalized Spatial Audio profile on your iPhone (iOS 16 or later with a TrueDepth camera). After that, when you sign in to your Apple Account on any Mac (macOS Ventura or later), your Personalized Spatial Audio profile is available to use in Logic Pro when monitoring your surround mix.

      • Music Mode button: Click the Music Mode button  to hear your surround mix through the Apple binaural renderer, applying the same headphone virtualization used by Apple Music.

      • Movie Mode button: Click the Movie Mode button  to hear your surround mix through the Apple binaural renderer, applying the same headphone virtualization used by Apple TV.

    • Renderer for Built-in Speakers: This format is available only if you use Logic Pro on a computer that supports Spatial Audio playback on internal speakers, and the speakers are selected as the output device in Logic Pro Audio Devices settings.

    • Renderer for Display Speakers: This option is only visible when an Apple Studio Display is connected and its display speakers are selected as the output device in the Logic Pro Audio Devices settings.

Play a surround project using speaker virtualization

The Spatial Audio Monitoring plug-in uses speaker virtualization to play back your surround project through the built-in speakers on a MacBook.

  1. In Logic Pro, open the Mixer in your surround project.

  2. Click the last insert slot on the surround master channel strip and choose Imaging > Spatial Audio Monitoring.

  3. Click the Spatial Audio Monitoring plug-in button to open its plug-in window.

  4. Click the Monitoring Format pop-up menu and choose Renderer for Built-in Speakers.
