LOINC Committees

Introduction

To help guide LOINC development, Regenstrief Institute has organized LOINC committees. Comprised of volunteers from academia, industry, and government, individual LOINC committees serves as the main advisory body for LOINC. Regenstrief’s Health Data Standards unit is the secretariat for the committees.

Mission

The primary purpose of the LOINC committees is to serve as an advisory body to Regenstrief in its development and distribution of LOINC by establishing overall naming conventions and policies for the development process. Members of each committee also serve as subject matter experts in their domains of expertise.

Meetings

Committees meet separately and on different schedules. You can find the cadence along with a list of future and past meetings on the individual committee page. Below are a few of the upcoming meetings across all committees. Each meeting agenda will be added once available.

Membership

We welcome prospective new committee members who meet these general qualifications.

  1. Have a direct and material interest in LOINC, i.e. you are a user of LOINC.
  2. Willingness to participate actively.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to LOINC as indicated by prior attendance (in-person or online) of at least three prior meetings, and either making substantive contributions to the discussion OR submitting more than one new concept requests in the past three years.

Clinical Committee

The Clinical LOINC Committee helps fulfill the mission of the LOINC Committee by focusing on LOINC content representing observations, measures, documents (and collections thereof) made on patients, populations, devices, and other units of analysis.

Document Ontology Committee

Chairs: Robert McClure, Anil Patel

The purpose of this committee is to review potential new axes values for LOINC Document Ontology.

Laboratory Committee

Chair: Pam Banning

The Laboratory LOINC Committee helps fulfill the mission of the LOINC Committee by focusing on LOINC content representing observations, measures, documents (and collections thereof) made on specimens.

Nursing Committee

Chairs: Jessica Cronin, Randy Woodward

The purpose of this committee is to discuss the use of LOINC in nursing-related clinical informatics.

Radiology Committee

Chair: Audrey Verde

The LOINC Radiology Committee oversees the development, use, and modification of radiological observations represented in LOINC and the LOINC/RSNA Radiology Playbook.
