WinDirStat is a disk usage analyzer and cleanup assistant for Microsoft Windows. It scans drives or folders, shows where space is used, and gives you tools to inspect, export, and clean up files safely.
Start with the pages below. They are ordered for end users first, then reference material, then developer and contributor information.
The User Guide covers everything you need to use WinDirStat day-to-day: installing and running your first scan, choosing what to scan, interpreting the results in the file tree and treemap, finding and filtering files, detecting duplicates, and safely cleaning up space.
The Reference section covers topics you may not need every day but are useful to have on hand: plain-language explanations of file system concepts (hardlinks, shadow copies, sparse files, etc.), a complete settings reference, command-line usage and CSV export, keyboard shortcuts, and troubleshooting guides for common problems.
The Developers and Contributors section is for people who want to help improve WinDirStat — whether by building and contributing code, adding or updating a translation, or filing useful bug reports and feature requests.
A scan only reads file system information. Cleanup commands can delete files, change compression, remove alternate data streams, delete shadow copies, or change Windows features. Prefer reviewing selected items in Explorer before deleting them, and use Delete (to Recycle Bin) unless you are certain.
WinDirStat's popularity has led to unofficial download sites. Install only through the Microsoft Store and package managers listed in Getting Started, the official GitHub releases, or links from windirstat.net.
