Transient ReauthenticationRequest Signal Exception Error on Posit Workbench with Snowflake managed credentials #1017

Hi folks, when making multiple dbConnect(odbc::snowflake()) calls in sequence (during a test suite that builds several database connections) we intermittently get:

Error: ! ODBC failed with error 00000 from [RStudio][Snowflake].
✖ (16)
• Unexpected exception: ReauthenticationRequest Signal Exception
•
ℹ From nanodbc/nanodbc.cpp:1184.

We're not sure what is causing the error, and given the characteristics of it I'm unable to provide a reprex.
We're using the Workbench managed credentials path, where odbc::snowflake() reads the token from the connections.toml file.

The same call succeeds immediately on manual retry with no session restart, no credential refresh, and no code change. It is never observed when making a single connection in isolation.

We tried adding an automated re-try to the dbConnect call, but the error stills comes up even after 2 re-tries with a 5 sec separation window.
We also noticed the error is more frequent in Workbench RStudio than in Workbench Positron (using the same test suite).

Environment

  • Posit Workbench with Workbench-managed Snowflake credentials (SNOWFLAKE_HOME and connections.toml set by Workbench)
  • odbc 1.6.4 and 1.7.0 (reproduced on both)
