Currently to make use of groups, we have to manually add new users, which is an easy step to forget!

I agree, but would I would think for the use-case where you would want a group automatically added to all new users it would make more sense to just not use/check that group? I guess it could be useful for the ability to remove a default group from a user you don't want to have some access anymore.

Yes, I think it would be better if it's just a normal group that gets checked by default for new accounts.

For maximum flexibility, each group could have an "assign to new accounts" checkbox under "MFA required". Might be excessive though, a single dropdown to select one default group might be better.

If you have a preference I could work on a PR.

My preferred solution would be a checkbox at the bottom of groups to 'Assign by Default' or similar wording. Then it would be automatically added in the UI to Invitations for new users, which would make it obvious that it was being added and easy to remove on a case-by-case basis

The ability to set a group to be assigned to new users/invites (Assign by Default) has been added in a recent release 😊
