How do I enable and set up categories in GitHub Discussions for my new repo if there's no ‘start discussion’ button?

Go to your repo's Settings > Features section, then check the box next to "Discussions" or click "Set up discussions" to enable it this adds the tab and lets you configure categories like Q&A or Ideas. If no button appears, ensure the repo is public (private free repos may need org/team setup) and you're the owner with write access; refresh or try incognito mode. Once enabled, a welcome template appears for your first post.

If you don't see the "Start discussion" button, first make sure GitHub Discussions is enabled for your repository. Go to Settings → General → Features and check Discussions. Then go to the Discussions tab, where you can create and manage discussion categories. Note that you must have admin or maintainer permissions to enable Discussions and configure categories.
