Client reached out this morning with a familiar problem. They realized late at night that a story scheduled for publication the following morning needed to be pulled, so to prevent the 5:00 am pub date they just deleted the date and saved.

In their case, that triggered a cascade of caching to Cloudflare & pushing to Apple News. By the time they realized the story was live, a google alert went out to someone on their name with incorrect information.

Three potential UX suggestions to make this less likely to occur.

  1. If deleted, auto populate the date with the current day/time rather than allow it to be empty.
  2. Move the enabled toggle above the slug, that would also align slug & title more closely.
  3. Warn editor of changes that affect status before allowing save.
