Partially addresses #677
This marks the first change to the figure class to make it more readable and less of a monolith. Many of the functions are difficult to analyse due to the high cognitive load being put on the user to generate a mental map of what is going in what function -- and some are frankly rather long.
This refactors the init function for the
Figureclass to (hopefully) sensible helpers.
