Peking University Environmental Microbiome Biotechnology Lab

Our research focuses on mining microbial resources in extreme environments (specifically hypersaline, acidic, and alkaline ecosystems). We are dedicated to discovering unknown microbial taxa with potential functions and biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for bioactive substances, achieving application and translation through cultivation and biosynthetic technologies.

To achieve these goals, the group primarily conducts work in the following areas:

  1. Technological Innovation: Developing microbiomics technologies and bioinformatics methods that integrate molecular biology and artificial intelligence (AI).

  2. System Construction: Establishing analysis algorithms, databases, processing pipelines, and visualization platforms for metagenomics and metatranscriptomics.

  3. Multi-omics Integration: Combining metabolomics, culturomics, and genetic manipulation techniques to achieve precise identification and efficient cultivation of microbial resources and BGCs from extreme environments.

Key Research Areas Focusing on microorganisms in both extreme environments and human systems, we develop:

  1. Enrichment and sequencing technologies for trace amounts of genetic material.

  2. Multi-omics software, algorithms, and analysis pipelines based on artificial intelligence.

  3. High-precision multi-omics data interpretation and directed enrichment cultivation technologies. These are used to discover unique microbial taxa related to Earth's evolutionary history and to explore their application potential in the production of specialized biological agents, environmental remediation, and ecosystem modification.
