in this video on parchment making there are ropes which he pulls to tighten and they stay tight, how does that work?

I was thinking along the same lines as @SolarMike and I've never seen them either.

I suspect that they are designed to slip if the rope tension increases too much. In the video application, the animal skin might shrink as it dries out and a non-slip tensioning system could cause the skin to rip.

  • $\begingroup$ @ConnieMnemonic, there's a taper on the two parts. If the rope is pulled to the right the inner disengages from the outer, the jaws open and the rope is released. If the inner is pushed into the outer the jaws will close and bite the rope. Pulling on the rope will then increase the 'bite'. I've never seen one so I don't know if there would be barbs or some other feature to increase the bite. $\endgroup$

The metal "tubes" are likely split on the hidden ends and they slide into a cone in the metal bush.

The tension in the rope, or cord, causes the split ends to clamp down on the cord and so hold tension.

Never seen one but that is a common method used, similar to collets and tapers.
