Ts

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Translingual

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From English tennessine.

Symbol

[edit]

Ts

  1. (chemistry) Chemical symbol for tennessine.
    Synonym: Uus
    • 2016 November 30, “IUPAC Announces the Names of the Elements 113, 115, 117, and 118”, in IUPAC[1] (in English):
Moscovium with the symbol Mc for element 115 and tennessine with the symbol Ts for element 117 were proposed by the discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA), Vanderbilt University (USA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA).

Etymology 2

[edit]

From T (tera-) +‎ s (second).

Symbol

[edit]

Ts

  1. (metrology) Symbol for terasecond, an SI unit of time equal to 1012 seconds.

English

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

Ts

  1. plural of T

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Opinions vary regarding the use of apostrophes when forming the plurals of letters of the alphabet. New Fowler’s Modern English Usage, after noting that the usage has changed, states on page 602 that “after letters an apostrophe is obligatory.” The 17th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style states in paragraph 7.15, “To aid comprehension, lowercase letters form the plural with an apostrophe and an s”. The Oxford Style Manual on page 116 advocates the use of common sense.

Noun

[edit]

Ts

  1. (chemistry) Abbreviation of tosyl.

Usage notes

[edit]

Arguably should not be used, to avoid confusion with Ts = tennessine. This will be especially a problem if and when a means of mass-producing tennessine is invented.

Noun

[edit]

Ts

  1. Abbreviation of Tuesday.
