Sitting atop the Tesla model lineup, the Model S hasn’t had many meaningful updates since it was launched way back in 2012. Still, it remains a devastatingly powerful large sedan with good all-electric range, even if its competitors now, erm, trump it in terms of luxury.
2026 Tesla Model S Competitors
Where this car once enjoyed its ‘segment of one’, time and innovation have put forth a host of alternatives. These include the soon-to-depart Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan, Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and Audi e-tron GT to name just a few.
What’s new with the Tesla Model S for 2026?
Serving as the brand’s flagship sedan, the Model S drives into 2026 with a few changes. New colours and a fresh wheel design are some of the easiest alterations for an automaker to do, though the latter pays dividends with better range estimates. Suspension updates are also supposed to help improve the car’s ride quality.
2026 Tesla Model S Performance
According to the brand, its top-rung Plaid trim can heave out 1,020 horsepower and blaze to 100 km/h in a scant 2.1 seconds, on its way to a 9.3-second quarter mile. Allegedly, new battery software manages degradation and permits back-to-back runs so owners can show off to more than one person at a time. The base Model S makes 670 hp and runs to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds
2026 Tesla Model S Efficiency
The base Model S is alleged to travel 660 kilometres on a fully charged battery, while the powerful Plaid trim get a 592 km rating from the feds. Both of these figures are slightly higher than last year, perhaps thanks to a refining of the car’s technology and aero addenda. Real world testing shows that your mileage may vary.
2026 Tesla Model S Safety
This car received a five-star rating from the Euro NCAP group, while also performing well in North American tests. It got top marks on most exams save for driver’s side small overlap wreck, suggesting it may not fare well in the notoriously tough updated version of that test.
2026 Tesla Model S Reliability
The boffins at Consumer Reports have reported a rollercoaster outlook of the Model S over the years, with its predicted reliability score currently sitting at 35-of-100 just last year. Estimated customer satisfaction is quite high, largely because no one buys a six-figure Tesla Model S by accident, though those numbers were posted long before current geopolitical concerns.
2026 Tesla Model S Interior
Unlike some of its competitors, the Model S does have front and rear trunks, making it capable of hauling large items. The steering wheel can be swapped to a yoke for $1,350, though why one would do so for anything other than meme potential is a mystery. A 22-speaker sound system provides the tunes and different interior colourways are available, including a black/white appearance to break up the monotony.
2026 Tesla Model S Dimensions
This is a vehicle which has not enjoyed any major updates in over a decade. As such, its overall length remains a touch over five metres, or 197.7 inches. Width excluding side mirrors is a truck-like 1,987 millimetres (78.2 inches) with an overall height of 1,431 mm (56.3 inches) when the suspension is run in a medium setting. Ground clearance in that setting is just 126 mm or 5.0 inches.
2026 Tesla Model S Canadian Pricing
Asking prices for Tesla models tends to fluctuate with market demands and the CEO’s posts on his own private social media playground. But as of this writing, a base Model S in Canada is listed for $139,990 plus fees and taxes. Popping for the Plaid trim will set ya back at least $159,990 though that sum rises to a shocking $204,110 once all options, fees, and some taxes (but not sales taxes) have been added.
