John Gibson (Eighth Circuit)

John R. Gibson was a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. He joined the Eighth Circuit in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Gibson assumed senior status on January 1, 1994, and he served as a senior judge until his death on April 19, 2014.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Springfield, Missouri, Gibson received a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1949 and a J.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law in 1952.[1]
Military career
Gibson was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946.[1]

Gibson was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit by President Ronald Reagan on February 2, 1982, to a seat vacated by Floyd Gibson. Hearings on Gibson's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on February 26, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Charles Mathias (R-Md.) on behalf of U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on March 2, 1982. Gibson was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on March 4, 1982, and he received his commission on March 9, 1982. Gibson assumed senior status on January 1, 1994, and he served as a senior judge until his death on April 19, 2014.[1][2] Gibson was succeeded in his position on the Eighth Circuit by Judge Diana Murphy.
Western District Court of Missouri
Gibson was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1981, to a seat vacated by Elmo B. Hunter. Hearings on Gibson's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 28, 1981, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on September 15, 1981. Gibson was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the United States Senate on September 16, 1981, and he received his commission on September 19, 1981. Gibson resigned from the district court on March 30, 1982, upon his elevation to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][3] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Ross Roberts.
