Features[edit]
- Cross-play and cross-progression - all systems can play against each other, and can use the same save file for each player.
- Solo Mode - learn the card game's mechanics through tutorials and enjoy the storylines of cards.
- Events - timed events called Festivals, with special rules and Forbidden/Limited lists.
Gameplay[edit]
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is a free-to-play multiplayer game where players can either duel against other players or play a singleplayer mode. Player can obtain cards via spending Gems on pack openings or crafting specific card(s) using Craft Points based on its rarity. The game uses a modified OCG Forbidden & Limited List that will be updated with each updates. Master Duel also features various accessories to personalize player's profile and dueling field, mostly based on a popular and notable cards.
Earning Gems[edit]
Ranked Duel[edit]
The main gameplay mode of Master Duel, where players from all across the world face off against each other.
Solo Mode[edit]
This single-player mode lets the player sample several archetypes of the game, and offers the option of using loaner decks to help new players get a feel of these archetypes.
Events[edit]
Time-limited events impose a special deck-building restriction to add some variation to the game, and offer more Gems or special cosmetics as rewards.
DUEL LIVE[edit]
A side mode where the player can watch replays of recent matches from either Ranked, Event, or Casual Duels. It's intended to help expose a player to new playstyles or inspire them to build new Decks. There's a daily mission that yields 5 Gems for watching a DUEL LIVE replay.
An update in 14 Jul 2023 expanded on this mode, allowing the player to pick from a selection of replays or enable autoplay for the mode. The selection menu shows the "main cards" for the Decks to give a clue on the matchup.
Proficiency Test[edit]
A side mode added on 6 Nov 2023, where players can test themselves by answering questions about card trivia and completing basic tasks in Dueling. Rewards include Legacy Pack tickets and various accessories.
Cards[edit]
The game includes 13,348 cards (plus 43 alternate artworks) as of October 28, 2025. The card pool is updated at least monthly, usually (but not always) with cards that have received release in both TCG and OCG within the previous year.
Cards are typically only added to the game after they have been released in both the TCG and OCG, usually being added within a year of being released in both the TCG and OCG. Outside of the Series 1 Normal Monsters (which have been in the game since launch), it is rare for cards to be added to Master Duel before their TCG debut.
Cards with animations[edit]
Some popular cards have animations when used, with new ones being added with almost every update (including for cards that were already in the game).
The following cards cause the game to play a Live2D-style animation when Summoned. Most cards with an alternate artwork in-game have an animation, with each artwork having a different matching one. In the Deck builder, these cards can be searched with the option "Summon Cut-In".

Missing cards[edit]
Almost all legal cards that have been available in both the TCG and OCG for over a year are included in Master Duel, with even long-Forbidden ones being present in the complete card list despite unobtainability. The small number of those that are still completely absent from the game are:
- Cards with unconventional effects: "Bait Doll", "Convulsion of Nature", "Double Spell", "Harmonic Oscillation", "Pole Position", "Question", "Spirit Elimination", and "Victory Dragon".
- In particular, "Pole Position" probably also because it is prone to causing infinite loops.
- Cards whose only artwork was drawn by Kazuki Takahashi: "Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon", "Exodia, the Legendary Defender", "Magician of Black Chaos MAX", "Neo Kaiser Glider", "Palladium Oracle Mana", "Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon", and "Shiba-Warrior Taro".
- "Spellbinding Circle", likely because its Japanese artwork prominently features a regular hexagram, which cannot be replaced due to the iconic card's Japanese name being "Curse of the Hexagram".
- For context, all other cards featuring a regular hexagram in their Japanese artworks (such as "Dark Magician Girl", "Magic Jammer", and "Black Magic Ritual") had it replaced with a pentagram for both physical releases and video games since 2016, possibly to avoid the association of what is now most commonly known as the Star of David with occult magic[a] (despite its historical usage as an occult symbol); however, a pentagram version of "Spellbinding Circle" already exists as "Curse of the Circle" (which is even called "Curse of the Pentagram" in Japanese). The card has not been reprinted in any territory that uses Japanese artworks since 2015 either. Notably, it had been edited in all of its anime appearances and the most recent editions of the manga.
- "Elemental HERO Air Neos", likely because of a 2008 legal dispute with Beyond Comics about its resemblance to their character Ravedactyl.
- "Mooyan Curry", possibly due to its ties to the Japanese restaurant franchise Moyan Curry.
- "Battlefield Tragedy", for unclear reasons. It is the only missing card listed here that was released after the game's launch, and is included due to multiple years having already passed since its TCG one.
Of these, only "Harmonic Oscillation" and "Mooyan Curry" are available in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.

Forbidden/Limited list[edit]
The game's Forbidden/Limited Lists, at initial release, was a variant of the April 2021 OCG Lists to match the availability of cards at the time.
Banlist changes in the game's Standard format are more frequent than the physical game, and different cards get affected to account for the game's best-of-1 format and staggered card release schedule. For instance, cards can become unbanned to coincide with an expansion that introduces them, and known powerful cards can be preemptively restricted the moment they debut in this game.
Various events feature their own specific Forbidden/Limited Lists which are usually the same as the Standard format but have additional cards restricted to fit the theme of the event (such as all non-Synchro Extra Deck Monsters being Forbidden in the Synchro Festival event).

Notes[edit]
- ↑ Kevin Tewart, the U.S. head of development for the TCG, has previously expressed his opposition to using a regular hexagram as an occult symbol for that reason.[2]

How is portraying the Star of David as some sort of occult symbol "better"?
