Maine voter registration

    • In Person: Received by close of polls Election Day.
    • By Mail: Received by close of business 21 days before Election Day.
    • Online: Received 21 days before Election Day.
  • If you register to vote within 21 days of an election, including on Election Day, you must register in person at the municipal registrar. Proof of identity and proof of residence is required. Contact your Local Election Office with any questions.

  • To register in Maine you must:

    • Be a citizen of the United States;
    • Be a resident of Maine and the municipality in which you want to vote;
    • Be 17 years old (you must be at least 18 years of age to vote, except that in primary elections you may vote if you are 17 but will be 18 by the general election).


    1. Use our Register to Vote Tool to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
    2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
    3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
    4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.
  • If you have been convicted of a felony and have questions about whether you can register to vote, visit Restore Your Vote to determine your eligibility.

Maine absentee ballots

    • In Person: Received 3 business days before Election Day.
    • By Mail: Received 3 business days before Election Day.
    • Online: Received 3 business days before Election Day.
  • Received by municipal clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day
  • Any registered Maine voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

    1. Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
    2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
    3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We'll provide the mailing address for you.
    4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. Your Local Election Official will also let you fax or email the application.
    5. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
    6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

    3. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated.
    4. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

Maine Early Voting

  • 30 days before Election Day (in-person absentee).

  • 3 business days before Election Day (in-person absentee).


Maine voter ID

  • If you've voted in Maine before or provided ID at the time of registration, you don't need to provide ID to vote in person.

    If you're voting for the first time in Maine; submitted your registration by mail; and didn't provide a copy of your Maine driver's license, Maine state ID card, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows your name and address when you registered, you may need to show one of these items to vote.

  • If you've voted in Maine before or provided ID at the time of registration, you don't need to provide ID to vote by mail.

    If you're a first time Maine voter who registered by mail and you didn't provide ID when you registered, you'll need to provide a photocopy of one of the following forms of ID along with your mail ballot:

    • A copy of a current photo ID showing your name and photograph
    • A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address
