At HNP, we believe in innovation and experimentation in all forms. Therefore, we’ve begun experimenting with Generative AI to enhance our journalism and reporting efforts. Generative AI is not a journalist, but it can facilitate and accelerate the work of journalism by pulling together information, production duties and the distribution of our work. Beginning now, we will, at times, use Generative AI in our work to:

• Assist with pre-publication workflows, such as SEO optimization, keywords generation and briefs.

• Be an initial review of content and support editing and quality checks, including identifying grammatical, spelling, or style issues.

• Assist with creating alternate or derivative versions of content, such as summaries, briefs, or platform-specific adaptations.

• Support reporting and research by organizing, synthesizing, or surfacing information, data, or background material, which is then evaluated by reporters and editors.

• Analyze, filter, or surface content from our archives to provide answers, results, or recommendations.

• Support additional or emerging uses of AI not specifically described above, guided by these principles and accompanied by appropriate safeguards and transparency for our audiences.

All use of AI across tools, newsroom content, and experiences on our sites is subject to editorial oversight consistent with our editorial standards and practices, and all AI output and content is reviewed except where explicitly noted or disclosed.

From time to time, we may publish content from outside of our newsrooms that provides information or data generated using AI tools. For example, shopping information or sports scoring.  When this is deployed, it will be clearly marked on the page.
