Trash collection and recycling in Norristown is contracted with J.P Mascaro. Questions or problems with your pick-up can be addressed to J.P Mascaro by calling 800-432-1616.
Trash & Recycling Rules (effective April 1, 2026)
Here are some quick rules to help you do trash and recycling right:
- All trash must be placed in the brown wheeled cart with a secure lid. No loose bags of trash.
- No more than four containers allowed.
- Do not put your trash out more than 18 hours prior to your scheduled trash collection times.
- Do not leave your trash cans out more than 18 hours after it has been collected.
- Find a place on your property to store your trash cans (not in the alley or at the curb).
- Any loose trash must be picked up and deposited in your trash can.
- *NEW* Bulk waste collection- Up to two bulk items (mattress, furniture, etc.) per household per pickup for each regularly scheduled pickup day. No appliances or hazardous or construction materials.
- Yard waste collection- The SECOND SATRUDAY of every month. Use container or biodegradable bags, and no plastic bags.
- Recycling- Please use the brown cart with the blue lid for recycling. Do not place recyclable items in plastic bags: place directly in the recycle can.
- Holidays - Offices and operations are closed on Labor Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If you receive once a week service, collection will be moved to the next day.
Do place trash in cans with lids no more than 18 hours prior to your regularly scheduled collection time.
Do not set cans out without a lid. They may get wet or cause litter.
Do not set plastic bags out alone. They can break and cause litter.
Bulk Collection (Updated - April 1, 2026)
Bulk item collection is no longer performed on a separate designated day (Saturday). Instead, bulk items are collected as part of your regularly scheduled residential trash service.
This change allows for more consistent collection and provides residents with regular opportunities each week to dispose of bulk items.
How Bulk Collection Works:
- Residents may place out up to two (2) bulk items per scheduled trash pickup day
- Bulk items must be placed at the curb on your regular trash day
- Items should be set out the night before or early the morning of collection
- Bulk items are collected during your normal trash route, not on a separate day
Important Guidelines:
- Only two (2) bulk items will be collected per pickup day
- If more than two items are placed out, only two will be collected
- If you miss your scheduled pickup day, items should be placed out on your next scheduled trash day
Items Not Included in Regular Bulk Collection:
- Appliances (white goods)
- Construction or renovation debris
- Hazardous materials
These items require special handling and are not collected as part of regular service.

Actualización sobre la recolección de artículos voluminosos – Información importante (Servicio Residencial)
El Municipio de Norristown desea informar sobre cómo se maneja actualmente la recolección de artículos voluminosos como parte del servicio residencial de basura.
La recolección de artículos voluminosos ya no se realiza en un día separado designado (sábado). En su lugar, estos artículos ahora se recogen como parte de su servicio regular de basura residencial.
Este cambio permite una recolección más consistente y brinda a los residentes oportunidades regulares cada semana para desechar artículos voluminosos.
Cómo funciona la recolección de artículos voluminosos:
- Los residentes pueden colocar hasta dos (2) artículos voluminosos por cada día programado de recolección de basura
- Los artículos deben colocarse en la acera el día regular de recolección
- Los artículos deben sacarse la noche anterior o temprano en la mañana del día de recolección
- Los artículos voluminosos se recogen durante la ruta normal de basura, no en un día separado
Guías importantes:
- Solo se recogerán dos (2) artículos voluminosos por día
- Si se colocan más de dos artículos, solo se recogerán dos
- Si pierde su día de recolección, los artículos deberán colocarse nuevamente en su próximo día programado
Artículos no incluidos en la recolección regular:
- Electrodomésticos (línea blanca)
- Desechos de construcción o renovación
- Materiales peligrosos
Estos artículos requieren manejo especial y no se recogen como parte del servicio regular.

Hazardous Waste
No hazardous waste is allowed. Visit the Montgomery County Website for information about hazardous waste collection events. Hazardous waste items include:
- Car batteries
- Gasoline
- Motor oil
- Oil-based paints
- Pesticides
- Other toxic and hazardous materials do not belong in the trash
E-Waste
A disposal ban in effect, whereby state law prohibits residents from putting covered devices such as televisions, desktop and laptop computers, monitors, keyboards and anything that connects to a computer out for trash collection. Visit the Montgomery County Website for a list of locations that accept TVs and computers.
Four Container Limit
There is a four container limit. If your trash is over the limit due to house, attic or basement clean-outs, you need to make special arrangements with J.P. Mascaro or another hauler to remove the trash for an extra fee.
