Stoneking 1967

Award Bronze Star To Rock Islander Sgt. Dan A. Stoneking, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stoneking, 2801 35th Ave., Rock Island, whose wife resides in Wilmette, Ill., has been awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action in Vietnam. Sgt. Stoneking received the bronze star while he was serving with the 1st Air Cavalry Division as historian and writer near An Khe, South Vietnam. He was awarded the medal for his brave action when he saved the lives of three wounded servicemen by pulling them back from enemy fire lines. He also has participated in 25 combat assaults against the Viet Cong. Stoneking has been named editor of the Cavalier Pacific Stars and Stripes Unit Depart-, ment Newspaper, Tokyo, Japan. He arrived yesterday in Tokyo for his new assignment. His wife, Sarah, will join him there at Christmas. He was a former staff writer for THE ARGUS, and received SGT. DAN STONEKING his master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston. He was a member of the sports staff of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune at the time he entered service.
