Poundland to shut 4 London stores in November as 18 across UK to close in weeks
The company aims to make the remaining shops cheaper in 2026
Poundland has announced four London shops will close in November as the chain plans to axe 12 shops across the UK. The struggling retailer has confirmed it will return to straightforward £1, £2 and £3 grocery pricing throughout all its UK outlets as the chain attempts to reverse its fortunes after narrowly escaping administration.
The discount retailer has promised to price approximately 60 per cent of grocery products at £1 across its network following the alterations, which follows a five-month trial at 17 outlets in the West Midlands.
The company stated the decision will see it go "back to its roots" and signal "the end of additional price complexity", with straightforward pricing scheduled to be implemented across general merchandise and clothing ranges in the forthcoming months.
The total of Poundland outlets is anticipated to fall to roughly 650 or 700 from 800 earlier this year as leases run out or landlords exercise any option to serve notice, reports the Mirror.
The chain has also confirmed that in stores which are shutting down, enormous sales are occurring to clear the stock. Some 12 shops, including a branch in Twickenham, already shut in October, while a further 18 will shut in November, December and January.
A Poundland spokesperson said: "Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead.
"The reductions of up to 40 per cent will see items marked down in price until they're sold and cover all the stock in each store from homewares to groceries and clothing to health and beauty."
Alongside 20 shops already marked for closure over these two months, an additional 10 will shut in November when leases run out, the chain has confirmed.
The retailer disclosed in June, after its acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers, that it intended to close 68 outlets and two warehouses across the UK, placing 1,300 positions in jeopardy.
Poundland's UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, stated: "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we're determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.
"The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we're leaving with pride. And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we'll continue to operate right across the UK."
