More than half of Europe's soils are degraded. Researchers are showing that restoring soil through better farming makes both ecological and financial sense. On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, a European project is highlighting the critical role healthy soils play in supporting biodiversity, food systems and climate resilience. The work supports the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe. The Mission leads the transition towards healthy soils by funding an ambitious research and innovation programme with a strong social science component. Across Europe, researchers and farmers are testing farming approaches that improve soil carbon, microbial diversity and water retention while maintaining strong agricultural yields. The project is also helping build the economic case for soil restoration by developing tools that demonstrate the long-term value of healthier land for farmers, businesses and policymakers alike. How can investing in soil restoration help protect biodiversity while strengthening Europe’s food systems and rural economies? ➡️ link.europa.eu/FWX6pn #ResearchImpactEU #Science4EU Publications Office of the European Union, Universidade de Vigo InBestSoil EU Environment and Climate EU Science, Research and Innovation

🌾👩🌾 Women are shaping the future of agriculture in Europe Meet Fabienne, a young farmer from Guadeloupe, who revived her family’s land to build Ti Delnote, a thriving 4-hectare organic farm. From free-range hens to medicinal plants, she is growing a sustainable business and inspiring a new generation, with support from EU funding. The EU is strengthening women’s representation in leadership roles, including in decision-making bodies within LEADER initiatives. In 2024 alone, over 55,000 young women received support to start their farming journeys through the #CAP. This International Year of Women Farmers, we shine a spotlight on the women driving change, making decisions, and leading with resilience and vision. Earlier this month, LEGUMINOSE Project and IntercropVALUES Horizon Project, funded under 'Legume-cereal intercropping for sustainable agriculture across Europe' topic and EU Agriculture and Food, organised a policy event at the European Parliament. 🔎 Projects shared almost 4y of results including data from +100 field trials in sites across Europe, South-Asia and South-east Africa. #Intercropping is a well-known agricultural practice which has significant untapped potential and can contribute to farm #resilience, yield stability, reduce inputs, and pest and disease control. It demands nonetheless additional knowledge and skills, as well as investments in machinery for farm operations and downstream processing (crop separation). 🔬 The event was an excellent example on how #HorizonEurope funded R&I contributes not only for scientific advancements and innovation creation and uptake by practitioners and businesses, but also has an important role in providing scientific evidence to inform policymaking. Thanks to the project coordinators Shamina Imran Pathan and Eric Justes, and the organisation to Clémence LERAY.

🐝 What if data and smart technologies could help reverse the decline in bee populations? On World Bee Day, we look at how researchers are developing new tools to support bee health and sustainable beekeeping across Europe. From smart hives and sensor-equipped digital combs to robotic bees that can interpret the waggle dance, scientists are combining data, AI and real-time monitoring to help beekeepers better understand and protect their colonies. Can innovation help secure a healthier future for bees and the ecosystems they support? ➡️ link.europa.eu/nXvYqd #Science4EU #ResearchImpactEU EU Science, Research and Innovation EU Environment and Climate

Food security starts with fertiliser security. For farmers, fertilisers are not an abstract input — they are often the difference between a good harvest and no harvest at all 🌾 Across Europe, I hear the same concerns: rising energy and fertiliser costs, and increasing uncertainty about access to essential nutrients. And this is not only a farming issue. It is a food security issue for Europe as a whole. 📢 That is why today we present the Fertiliser Action Plan — a new European Partnership on fertilisers. We act on three fronts: 🚜 Immediate support for farmers this year, including support from the agricultural reserve and more flexible use of CAP advance payments, so farmers can access liquidity ahead of the next planting and harvesting season. 🔄 Less dependence, more European solutions. We will strengthen Europe’s supply of fertilisers and nutrients, boosting the use of organic, bio-based and recycled nutrients such as digestate 🌱while reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers slowing their uptake. 📊 A fairer and more transparent market. Farmers currently lack clear and comparable price information across Member States. We will strengthen EU-level monitoring and improve price transparency so that farmers can make informed decisions in a more predictable market. 🤝 This Action Plan also opens the way towards a European Partnership on fertilisers, bringing together investment and coordinated action at EU, national and private level. This comes at a crucial time for Europe’s food security, our competitiveness, and our strategic autonomy — and above all, ensuring that we do not lose productive agricultural land 🇪🇺 🖇️ https://lnkd.in/e-Y5v4YY EU Agriculture and Food

EU Agriculture and Food welcomes the findings of the latest European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) report on pesticide residues in food, which once again confirms the strength and credibility of the EU food safety system and the commitment of European farmers to safe, high-quality food for consumers across the EU. At the same time, the report highlights the need for continued vigilance on possible compliance gaps between EU and imported products. The report also highlights the importance of ensuring that all products placed on the EU market, including imported products, comply with EU requirements and standards. ✔️ Safe food ✔️ High standards ✔️ Consumer trust ✔️ Fair conditions for EU farmers Explore the report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXWQGeBv

🌾Fertilisers are essential to agricultural productivity and food production. They give crops the nutrients they need to grow, stay healthy and produce high yields. Fertilisers are key to support farmers' competitiveness while ensuring food security across Europe. Do you know the main nutrients plants need and the role they play? 👉 Swipe through the carousel to learn more. 📅 On 19 May, the European Commission will present a Fertiliser Action Plan to support affordability and security of supply. 🌾👩🌾 Women are shaping the future of agriculture in Europe Meet Martina, a passionate viticulture farmer from Italy, caring for vineyards in a UNESCO heritage site. Deeply connected to the land, she is committed to advancing regenerative agriculture, promoting soil health and biodiversity while inspiring others in the farming community. From innovation to sustainability, women are stepping into leadership roles, transforming rural economies and redefining what it means to lead in the agricultural sector. Yet, fewer than one-third of farms are managed by women: a gap that needs to change. The EU is strengthening women’s representation in leadership roles, including in decision-making bodies within LEADER initiatives. This International Year of Women Farmers, we shine a spotlight on the women driving change, making decisions, and leading with resilience and vision, continuing to inspire, support, and empower more women to take the lead in agriculture.
