Gary's reflections on grief, faith, family and resilience have revealed an even deeper understanding of the courage required to endure life's greatest hardships while continuing to serve others. I was honored and humbled to interview Gary at BIO 2026 last week. What a great American- and human being. His book on his reflection's on Mac's life and death will be released on November 10. John F. Crowley shared thisTHE FUTURE OF BIOTECH…in studio early this morning with CNBC to discuss the 50th anniversary this month of the founding of the first biotech company. We discussed a range of topics and most importantly the real promise that biotech can deliver today and, in the years ahead so that increasingly a doctor when delivering a tough diagnosis does not have to say, “I am sorry, there is nothing we can do.” With the explosion of biotechnologies that answer is simply no longer acceptable. We have real hope in so many areas- cancer, rare disease, autoimmune disease, brain diseases, and more. We just need to let biotech entrepreneurs flourish and the ecosystem do what it does best. And to make sure that there are no barriers to people accessing these medicines once approved. No one should ever go a day without the medicines they need….no one.

A 51 year old Catholic priest who has extended his ministry through popular podcasts and lectures, beginning with his "Bible in a Year" series. He is currently the chaplain of the Catholic student center at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His podcast has 1.3 million followers. Father's unique gifts of spirit and his ability to communicate have made him a leading figure not only in the Catholic Church but with many people of faith. I was honored to be his guest for this YouTube podcast over this past Easter weekend. We discuss our life's journey, lessons learned, the role of faith, overcoming adversity, service, and the hope and promise of science and medicine to enhance and extend human life- and the interdependence of faith and science. John F. Crowley shared thisEARTHRISE...Our granddaughter Stella has been following the Artemis 2 mission since launch. Stella watched last night's trip around the moon and asked "Papa, who is that lady in the spaceship?" when Artemis reappeared and Mission Specialist Christina Koch read those beautiful words ("We will explore...we will build ships. But ultimately, we will always choose Earth. We will always choose each other."). I told Stella who Christina is. Stella replied "I wanna be an astronaut like her, Papa!" She then ran over into my study and pointed to this picture on my wall that I have long treasured from Apollo 8 and their trip around the moon on Christmas Day 1968. Earthrise. Stella then said very calmly and firmly "I will go to the Moon someday, too." And who says NASA missions don't inspire anymore? Tell that to Stella. And millions of other kids. John F. Crowley shared thisOUR BETTER ANGELS....my Mom passed away last week. She was nearly 83. Her life was one of strength and constantly overcoming adversity. This is a picture of Mom Barbara, younger brother Joe and I (Yes, 1970s). It was just the 3 of us then as my Dad had died earlier as a police officer on duty in a tragic car accident. Mom would live another 50 years after Dad... Mom was very healthy until just a few months ago when diagnosed with advanced heart disease, then a series of strokes and a very tough January and February in and out of hospitals. I spend a lot of my days working on and talking about what is wrong with our health care system (and as I have come to learn very recently, our elder care systems as well). But what I witnessed these past few months was something remarkable. In a complex and often inequitable system, the very best of our health care is defined by the men and women in this field. It was the doctors (some who knew my mom well, others who were ER docs who had never seen her before) who applied their skill to find her more time with the people she loved. The caregivers who gave her comfort and dignity. The nurses who cared for her, listened to her, and watched over her through the many long nights. And in the end, the hospice nurses who eased her journey to God. In those last days they cared not only for Mom, but for our family who was by her bedside, always asking "let us know what you need. We are here for you...". These are our better angels. In whatever ways we seek to change our healthcare system, let's not lose sight of the very best of us. Mom's obituary is linked below. Here is the final paragraph from the obit: "Healthy and vibrant until her final months, she traveled frequently to see friends and visit her family back up north. She was lucid and sharp as a tack as always and in her final hours she shared with her sons and daughters-in-law words of wisdom from a life well lived, most notably 'stay close to each other always throughout your lives. Family is everything.' They promised they would- and she then closed her eyes and went to sleep peacefully, entering the Lord’s Kingdom the next day. " https://lnkd.in/eCu-D8gZ

Crowley shared thisTESTIMONY BEFORE CONGRESS… yesterday, I had the privilege to testify before the energy and commerce committee, which has oversight over much of healthcare in the United States. I represented the 1000+ biotechnology companies at BIO, providing especially the views of small and midsize biotechs which originate more than 70% of all new medicines. We need more INNOVATION, more cures, more entrepreneurs, and more research scientists from universities, to the NIH, to small companies to our largest companies. And we need to ensure complete ACCESS and AFFORDABILITY to medicines- cutting out middle men who drive up costs and reforming insurance practices that delay and deny medicines to patients. For too many Americans, delay and denial, equals suffering and death. We have to be bold. No one should ever go a day without the medicines they need.John F. Crowley gave his opening testimony before the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health, outlining how America can continue to lead the world in #biotechnology. In his remarks, John emphasized the following core priorities... • Biotech as a national security imperative: With China rapidly scaling its biotech capabilities, maintaining U.S. leadership in biomedical innovation is essential to our economic strength, global competitiveness, and health security. • Protecting America’s innovation ecosystem: Small and mid-sized biotech companies drive the majority of new medicines. They depend on strong IP protections, clear regulatory pathways, and a stable, market-based environment to sustain discovery. • FDA predictability and efficiency: A science-driven, transparent, and well-resourced FDA is critical. Reducing time, cost, and complexity in development - and strengthening regulatory review - will accelerate patient access and keep the U.S. the global gold standard. • Simplify the system and cut hidden supply chain costs: To address the real drivers of medicine affordability, policymakers must simplify the system and cut hidden supply chain costs that inflate what patients pay at the pharmacy counter. • A roadmap for 21st century access: Removing financial and systemic barriers - capping out-of-pocket costs, reforming utilization management, and ensuring savings reach patients - will create a modern framework that puts patients first and improves long-term affordability. Crowley reacted on thisOn August 6, 2011, a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter-call sign Extortion 17-was shot down in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, while carrying a quick reaction force to support an engaged Army Ranger unit. All 38 aboard were lost, including 17 U.S. Navy SEALS. It was the deadliest single incident for American forces in the Afghanistan campaign and a driving force behind the creation of the SEAL Legacy Foundation, dedicated to supporting the families of the fallen. Today, we honor the service, memory, and LEGACY of the brave men who gave the ultimate sacrifice. #NoOneLeftBehind #NoOneForgotten

A poster featuring my cousin Charlie Romano on it. 🤯 ____ Growing up, every Romano gathering ended in Charlie playing the piano by ear(!!) and the rest of us singing everything from the ND Fight Song to Billy Joel. While at Yale University, Charlie debuted a musical he wrote and is now developing for Broadway. Those who attended the Napa Institute's Summer Conference were in awe of his performances, especially alongside the equally talented Christina Maxwell. ____ While it was surreal walking into a hotel across the country and seeing my cousin’s face, it was even more special watching everyone else discover what our family has always known: Charlie is a musical genius. ❤️

Love this insight from Dan Neil! Totally agree. We can do a lot of individual tasks through AI. Human in/on the loop is a great way to work through multiple tasks, but is still incredibly suboptimal if you are looking for AI transformation. With this architectural approach, they can really reach to levels we have all been waiting to see...

There are deadlines approaching in Washington, and much is riding on the outcome of some tense negotiations. There have also been announcements that have changed the conversation and added to the uncertainty. Here’s what MassBio and I are tracking right now: 1️⃣ H-1B Visas: The Trump Administration issued new restrictions on H-1B visas late last week, including a $100,000 fee for new applications. The move has raised alarms across biotech and other industries, as the US leadership in many high-tech fields has benefited from global scientific and technical talent. 2️⃣ Government Shutdown: Congress failed to pass a continuing resolution to avoid a shutdown before heading to recess, with the Senate failing to gather enough votes to pass the House version approved last week. With negotiations stalled and a looming deadline, uncertainty remains with less than a week left until a government shutdown. 3️⃣ Most Favored Nation (MFN) Update: The Administration is nearing its September 29 deadline it set for pharmaceutical manufacturers to commit to ‘most favored nation’ pricing. Some manufacturers have recently announced that they will make efforts to bring prices of drugs in the UK in line with the US, including BMS, which said it would sell its schizophrenia drug Cobenfy in the United Kingdom at the U.S. list price. While it is unclear what tools the Administration will implement if it is not satisfied with manufacturer efforts, MassBio will continue to share its perspective that MFN-style price controls will ultimately slow innovation and reduce access to treatments. 4️⃣ SBIR Reauthorization: The House passed a one-year SBIR/STTR extension earlier this month. There is pressure on the Senate to pass the temporary extension before the Sept 30 deadline. Senate Small Business Committee Chair Joni Ernst (R-IA) continues to pursue the INNOVATE Act, which includes stricter oversight measures. Bipartisan support for a short-term reauthorization remains strong, though debates over program reforms are far from over. 5️⃣ NIH Funding: While broader budget issues play out in Congress, both the House and Senate appear to be aligned in maintaining robust NIH funding, with proposed budgets in both Chambers near current levels of $48 billion, rejecting the Administration’s proposed 40% cut. Legislators have repeatedly underscored the critical role NIH plays in driving long-term research progress and sustaining the U.S. life sciences ecosystem. #PatientDriven #FDA #NIH #SBIR #DrugPricing

Numeric Ranges That Survive Across Jurisdictions Ranges look simple. They’re where many specs quietly lose ground in prosecution. Here’s a durable pattern across US/EP/CN/JP/KR/IN—clean, consistent, and easy to scale through the spec and claims: 1) Define first. Constrain second. Before you give numbers, define every measurable quantity in plain terms, with unit + method + conditions. Example : As used herein, “gap” refers to the shortest orthogonal distance from the separator edge to the frame, measured by calibrated optical microscopy (1 µm/pixel) and reported in millimeters at 25 °C. 2) Declare minimums • “The gap is at least about 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, or 0.4 mm.” 3) Declare maximums • “The gap is at most about 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.5 mm, or 0.6 mm.” 4) Bridge them explicitly • “The gap is of any value between the aforementioned values, e.g., from about 0.2 mm to about 0.5 mm.” Why this holds up: • Traceable endpoints. Examiners can see exactly where each narrower range comes from. • Built-in fallbacks. You can drop to any sub-range without inventing new numbers later. • Spec–claim harmony. The language ports cleanly into claims or remains as support if you keep it in the spec. Common pitfalls to avoid: • Mixing styles (“0.2–0.5 mm” here, “at least” there). Pick one and be consistent. • Unspecified measurement conditions (temperature, instrument, calibration). Define once; reuse everywhere. • Units that drift across the triad. Micro-checklist (paste into your template): • Definition line for every measured quantity (term + unit + method + conditions). • At least line (multiple candidate mins separated by or). • At most line (multiple candidate maxes separated by or). • Bridge line using the lowest min and highest max for the “from … to …” sentence. • If citing performance (yield, purity, cycles), pair the range with the test method in the same paragraph.
