Attending yesterday’s Synechron’s EmpowHer event at LSEG was a timely reminder of both the progress we’ve made — and the work still ahead — in supporting women to build successful careers in tech. Women currently make up just 22% of the tech workforce, yet as we move into an AI‑driven era, many of the traditional barriers may be starting to come down. Gendered stereotypes about “tech roles” are becoming less relevant and meaningful contribution doesn’t necessarily require a formal STEM pathway. AI rewards something different: ✨ Curiosity ✨ Diverse thinking ✨ Growth mindsets ✨ The courage to challenge the status quo It’s no longer about having all the answers — it’s about asking better questions. What if...? Why can’t it be done like this...? What else is possible...? A key takeaway came from Triona O’Keefe, who highlighted two critical factors in helping women progress into senior roles: 🔆 Sponsorship — someone actively advocating for your potential 🔆 Working with a Coach — especially to overcome imposter syndrome and step up into bigger roles confidently Her challenge to the room got everyone's attention: “Who are you going to sponsor and take a chance on?” In my coaching work, I see every day how transformative it is when women are supported with both sponsorship and development — and when organisations create cultures where they can thrive. As AI reshapes the industry, tech careers are becoming more creative, more collaborative, and more accessible than ever before.
