On 17 July the European Commission published its EU ETS revision proposal. Article 9c stands out and has caused a lot of noise since. For the first time, a compliance-driven market for carbon removal is taking shape in Europe. Nothing like this existed before, even as a proposal. At Phlair, we're directly affected. Here’s what we think about it: - Quality before price. Fossil carbon has to be counterbalanced by storage on a comparable timescale. Only DACCS and BioCCS do that reliably. - Volume is not settled. 250 million allowances is not 250 million tonnes of CDR. That number has driven most of the debate. It shows how open the pricing question stays. What gets delivered depends entirely on the cost curve. - The signal is real. Ten years of committed volume plus a sovereign buyer is what makes deployment financeable. For the first time, compliance demand can secure an investment decision. So the call to action runs both ways: DACCS has to put realistic growth on the table, and policymakers have to make the support mechanisms reachable. We're optimistic Europe is heading the right way, and we'll put in the work to deploy and move down the cost curve. We're building to supply this market. Our first German demo plant is coming soon. Emilie joined Phlair in 2023 as a working student and intern. She studied chemistry through her Bachelor’s, and specialized in electrochemistry during her Master’s. Now she returns to pursue her PhD with Phlair. Her research will focus on the development of our electrochemical salt-splitting hydrolyzer, with the goal of applying it to direct air capture. Why a PhD? “I want to understand things on a deep level. A PhD gives you the chance to focus on one defined topic for a few years. And, it‘s a training ground for end-to-end project management, taking an idea from concept all the way to execution.” Why at Phlair? “Here, I see direct impact of my research. The team is exceptionally mission-driven, motivated and smart. I just couldn’t leave!” Emilie’s PhD is supervised by Prof. Hubert Gasteiger from Technical University of Munich (TUM), who has been active in the fields of electrolysis, fuel cells, and lithium-ion batteries for more than three decades. Through regular meetings, she exchanges data and ideas with his group and has access to their lab and analytics infrastructure. This connects Phlair’s applied research directly with academic depth. We're thrilled to be taking this journey with Emilie and supporting her PhD. Backing outstanding talent like Emilie early on and throughout their career is what drives us, and we look forward to supporting more PhDs in the future.

Interview: EU should reform #ETS to include direct air capture, the “gold standard” for removals – Phlair CEO I spoke to Malte Feucht, co-founder and CEO of #DAC start-up Phlair just outside of Munich, about the outlook for his industry, what it needs to scale and what the upcoming reform of EU emissions trading has to do with it all. "The integration of permanent removals [into the ETS] is essential. DAC is the gold standard, and any reform should reflect that," said Feucht. The European Commission is set to present its proposals on 17 July, which will start a lengthy legislative reform process. Asked about the impact on the industry of recent news that Microsoft – by far the largest investor in removal credits – decided to pause future purchases, Feucht pointed to the announcement by Frontier, a group including the likes of Google, H&M, and now also Anthropic. "Phlair's biggest customer – the Frontier buyer group – just announced roughly one billion US dollars in additional commitments to support projects until 2040. They especially want to bridge the phase between purely voluntary and fully established compliance markets." Feucht also said that Germany is a good environment to build start-ups, for example and thanks to its universities and vocational training system. "Germany has all the ingredients to build up a world leader in direct air capture technology," said Feucht, arguing that the country could become the DAC "technology leader and supplier for Europe and beyond." We're building the German Hidden Champion for Direct Air Capture. As part of the CDR Experience Tour, we showed 80 guests from politics, science, industry, and media what that looks like. We walked them through our pilot, ran a panel on the voluntary carbon market, and hosted a talk on how CDR fits into the EU ETS. Germany has committed €500M to carbon removal. The question now is who turns that budget into real tonnes captured. And whether Germany ends up building the technology and participate in this large, emerging market. We believe our product can change conventional DAC economics: a DAC process running directly on intermittent wind and solar. While most DAC needs baseload power, we’re ready to leverage the grid of 2030+. Thanks to Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) and everyone who showed up.

WISAG has kept buildings clean for 60 years. Now they're turning to the CO₂ in the air. For a values-driven family business thinking in generations, that's a logical move. Carbon removal will be part of how companies handle their footprint for decades. WISAG is laying the foundation for a successful emissions strategy: mastering the technology first instead of relying on certificates alone, learning DAC hands-on, early and proactively. As Michael C. Phlair is one of the stations on the CDR Experience Tour 2026. We’ll show a delegation from politics, industry and science that Direct Air Capture is more than PowerPoint slides. Here's the thing about carbon removal: almost no one outside the CDR bubble has ever seen it work. It lives in decks, models and press releases. But the people making the decisions that decide whether this industry scales have rarely stood in front of the actual machine. On 18 June, the #CDRExperienceTour, organised by Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE) together with remove, CDRterra and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, brings people from politics, industry, science and media to Germany's leading carbon removal projects. We're one of the stops. The timing matters. Germany announced a federal budget of €500M for carbon removal through 2033. The EU's CRCF now has its first methodologies for permanent removals, DAC among them. By 31 July, the Commission will set out how permanent removals are integrated into the EU ETS. The groundwork for a real CDR market in Europe is being laid right now and we'll show the delegation what that looks like in practice. At Phlair, the focus is Direct Air Capture. Our Hydrolyzer-based system pulls CO2 from the air and can run on intermittent renewables like wind and solar, integrating with the electrical grid of the future.
