    Executive Director Report

Looking back on the first half of the year, many exciting things are happening across the Eclipse Foundation ecosystem. For example, there have been major milestones achieved by several projects, including the recent 2022-06 release of the IDE, the launch of the Adoptium Marketplace, the introduction of the Sparkplug Compatibility Program, and the soon-to-be-released Jakarta EE 10 update. We have also seen the introduction of three new Digital Twin projects and the first Oniro projects, along with other projects including: Eclipse Novamoon (ECD), Eclipse Diafanis (IoT), Eclipse jbom (Technology), Eclipse Migration Toolkit for Java (Adoptium) and Jakarta RPC and Eclipse ExpressLy (ee4j). I encourage everyone to participate in these exciting new projects, and as a reminder, we are always open to new project proposals.

I’m proud to see the new Software Defined Vehicle working group formed and attract multiple new members to the Foundation. The objectives of this working group are significant, and it represents a major opportunity to drive the strategic open source efforts of the automotive industry. The open source projects already proposed to be associated with this new initiative are exciting; I want to invite all members interested in this space to join us at the SDV Contribution Day scheduled for June 30th.

Our team at the Foundation has also been incredibly busy over the first half of the year, and I’m pleased to see so many significant initiatives advancing to the benefit of our community. To mention just a few, the recent enhancements to our IP processes, the recent improvements to our infrastructure, and the launch of the new member portal are all examples of the ongoing work to improve the way we engage with our members and committers.

One initiative I’m excited to be personally involved with is the work underway to have Eclipse Foundation serve as a leader in the open source supply chain security space. This topic is incredibly important to the broad ICT industry, and the work underway at Eclipse will assist our committers and projects to meet the demands of that industry in an effective way. I’m also pleased to have Mikaël Barbero step in to serve as our new Head of Security; many of you will already be familiar with the great work done by Mikaël – having him tackle this new leadership role bodes well for our success in this initiative.

I’m pleased to report our membership remains strong. As of the end of May, our current corporate members now total 330, and our number of committers has grown to 1,795.

    Budget

The Eclipse Foundation’s finances remain on target for 2022. The 2022 budget approved by the Foundation’s board of directors included significant growth for the Foundation, and we are ahead of that budget plan concerning overall revenue growth. This growth is based on a few of the major initiatives, and the continued solid engagement with many of our projects.

As a reminder, as part of our transition to a Europe-based foundation, we will be reporting all financial information in Euros rather than USD as of this year. See the chart below.

    Moving Forward

The remainder of 2022 looks even more exciting, with several projects scheduling releases, and as many major initiatives underway. Stay tuned - it should be an exciting remainder of 2022.

Finally, on a personal note - I am looking forward to EclipseCon 2022 where, for the first time since before the global pandemic, I will have the opportunity to see so many of you again. Please be sure to plan on attending - the event promises to be a fantastic event to learn, share experiences, and generally get reacquainted with so many of the colleagues we interact with every day. I’ll see you there!

    Adoptium

    Adoptium Marketplace Launched

The Adoptium Working Group recently launched the Adoptium Marketplace. This new marketplace allows users to obtain Java SE TCK certified and AQAvit quality-tested binaries, including Eclipse Temurin, via a centralized site managed by the Eclipse Foundation.

By doing so, the Eclipse Foundation and the Adoptium Working Group give millions of developers, researchers, and other organizations an easy means of securing high performance, enterprise-caliber, cross-platform, AQAvit verified, and TCK-certified binaries for general use across the Java ecosystem.

    Sparkplug

Sparkplug Compatibility Program & PAS Submitter Status

The recently announced Sparkplug Compatibility Program is an open source software specification that enables mission-critical operational technology to be used by clients to meet industry standards such as MQTT to seamlessly integrate data from their applications, sensors, devices, and gateways with most Industrial Internet Of Things Infrastructure.

Read the press release to find out how the Sparkplug compatibility program will make it easier for end-users to ensure that their solutions will seamlessly integrate with IIoT devices and networks.

Sparkplug Approved PAS Submitter - ISO/IEC

The Eclipse Foundation obtained the status of Publicly Available Specification (PAS) Submitter by the Information Technology Joint Technical Committee on May 23.
