McNealy, Scott oral history
Scott McNealy was born on November 13, 1954 in Columbus, Indiana into an illustrious family. His father became vice-chairman of American Motors. Scott graduated from Harvard (BA) and Stanford (MBA) with an emphasis on Business and Manufacturing. He co-founded the computer technology company Sun Microsystems in 1982. Despite having no technical background, Scott's leadership helped to develop Sun into one of the world's leading computer companies. In particular, his articulation of the company vision, "the network is the computer" led to Sun's role as the dot in the dot com during the amazing growth of the Internet in the mid-1990s. Scott gained a reputation as a brash and aggressive CEO, unconventional for his outspoken comments about his business rivals. However, those close to him emphasized his business insight, his appreciation of his coworkers and his ability to relate to many different types of people, including his customers. After leaving Sun, Scott has devoted time to his start-ups Curriki, a free online education service, and Wayin, a social intelligence and visualization company. Besides being a self-proclaimed "raging capitalist", Scott is very proud of his four sons who are following in his footsteps as top golfers.
