Why are you requiring ORCID for corresponding authors of some Cambridge journals?

We believe that higher ORCID uptake is going to provide benefits across the whole research ecosystem – for authors, researchers, institutions, funders and publishers alike. Used properly, ORCIDs enable greater discoverability for research publications, efficiencies for publisher and funder systems and convenience for researchers when managing multiple accounts and activities.

These positives increase the uptake of ORCID, so as a publisher we can play our part in establishing ORCID as a new industry standard by asking our authors to provide their iD at the point of article submission.

How should I provide my ORCID ID?

You’ll need to submit your ID by using the special field in the submission systems for some Cambridge journals. When you click on the button to provide your ID, you will be taken to the ORCID page to log in so that we can check that you’re the owner of the ID and make sure you’ve given us permission to use it. Once you've associated your ID with your submission system account, it can be published on any subsequent articles that you submit and publish with us.

Is there a cost to me for my ORCID?

No, ORCID IDs are free to researchers. Cambridge University Press has a membership to ORCID and it is memberships like ours that help to fund the organisation.

Why can I not add my ORCID to my manuscript after acceptance

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to authenticate ORCID iDs after acceptance. ORCID’s policy  advises that only authenticated ORCID iDs can be added to a manuscript:

"To make this work, organizations MUST obtain authenticated ORCID iDs  using the ORCID OAuth API. This means they include an ORCID branded button or link within their system, that when clicked, asks the user to sign to their ORCID record."

This means that ORCID iDs cannot be added to manuscripts after acceptance until an alternative mechanism of authentication can be introduced.

Why can I not add my co-authors’ ORCIDs?

In order for us to use your ORCID appropriately, we need to connect it to our publishing systems and become a Trusted Organisation on your ORCiD profile (see information here https://support.orcid.org/hc/en-us/articles/360006973893-Trusted-organizations ). It would be inappropriate and a security risk for the corresponding author to connect someone else’s ORCID, so co-authors need to add and authenticate their own ORCIDs by logging in with their own passwords.

How do my co-authors add their ORCIDs to the manuscript?

Automatic account creation: 
When a manuscript is submitted, any co-authors who do not already have a peer review site account will automatically have one created. They will receive an email with instructions on adding and authenticating their ORCID iD.

For Journals without automated emails: 
Co-authors must log in to (or create) a peer review site account for the journal using the same email address listed on the submission. During profile setup, they should enter and authenticate their ORCID iD. This can be done at any time before manuscript acceptance.

Before initial submission: 
If a co-author authenticates their ORCID iD before the manuscript is first submitted, the submitting author will be able to select the co-author's details (including the authenticated ORCID) from the existing peer review site account when compiling the author list.

After initial submission:
If the ORCID iD is not authenticated before submission, the system will create accounts for any co-authors who do not already have one and send them an email with instructions for adding and authenticating their ORCID.

Important notes:

A co-author only needs to add and authenticate their ORCID once.

All users (authors, co-authors, and reviewers) should periodically update their peer review site account details, including ORCID, affiliations, addresses, and email addresses.

Troubleshooting

I cannot log on to my ORCID account

You can sign in to your ORCID account using the email address you used to set up the account or using your ORCID iD and password. If this fails, try re-setting your password using the ‘Forgot your password?’ link, testing all familiar passwords. If you are still unable to log in, you can ‘recover your account details’ on the ORCID site. If you no longer have access to the email address you used to set up your ORCID account, you can try using your ORCID iD and password. Otherwise, if you still do not know your account details, you can either contact ORCID support directly by providing your ORCID iD (if known), name, any relevant former email addresses, and a current institutional or personal email you would like listed against your account going forward. Otherwise, you can set up a new ORCID account using a long-standing email.

I thought I had already linked my ORCID account in this peer review site. Why do I have to do this again?

ORCID permissions are tied to the publisher, and when a journal transfers from one publisher to another, you will need to reconnect your account with ORCID. The ORCID ID association remains with the account, but the new publisher does not automatically receive permission to manage this. Permission must be actively granted by you to the new publisher. You can notice when you try to connect an account with ORCID that the name of the publisher is displayed on that screen on the ORCID side. That is what changes, as you are validating your account through the publisher’s credentials.

I have two ORCID accounts, what do I do?

As an ORCID is supposed to be a permanent signifier of a single researcher’s record, it is unorthodox for one individual to maintain two ORCID accounts. ORCID accounts can be merged to remove the duplication. For information on doing this please visit ORCID’s support page .

How do I ensure my ORCID iD is on my manuscript?

When you submit your manuscript, you will need to link your ORCID account to your ScholarOne or Editorial Manager account if you have not already done so.

ScholarOne: You can do this by logging in, clicking on your name in the top right-hand corner, clicking e-mail address/name, and following the steps below:

Editorial Manager: You can do this by logging in, clicking ‘Update my information’ in the top right-hand corner, and under the ‘personal information’ section, and following the steps below:

• Click ‘Create an ORCID iD’ or ‘Associate your existing ORCID iD’ as required. This will take you to the ORCID site to create an ORCID account or log in to your ORCID account, which will ensure your ORCID iD is automatically imported into your peer review site account for this journal. This ORCID iD will then be attached to your author details against any manuscript you submit to this journal’s site.

I cannot link my ORCID iD to my submission/profile.

This typically occurs if you have duplicate accounts on the peer review site, which often happens when you are listed as a co-author and the submitting author provides a different email address. The peer review site automatically creates a new account in such cases, but ORCID iDs can only be associated with a single account.

Authors: We recommend asking the editorial office to merge your accounts.

For editorial offices: We recommend the editorial office conducts regular database reviews and account merging.

In some cases, authors have been unable to log in via ORCID due to pop-up blockers. For Editorial Manager in particular, the ORCID authentication opens in a new window, and this behaviour can be disrupted by browser settings that block pop-ups.
