With more than 3,000 dedicated employees, Alstom operates an industrial plant in Barcelona focused on manufacturing diverse rolling stock, a propulsion systems factory in the Basque Country, and several technological innovation centers in Madrid. These centres are dedicated to advancing projects in railway safety, signalling, maintenance, and digital mobility.

Alstom boasts a robust local industrial and technological presence, encompassing all aspects of rail transport and sustainable mobility: signalling, infrastructure, train manufacturing, propulsion systems, maintenance, and digital mobility.

  • Trains and tractions systems

    Alstom has one of the most technologically advanced rolling stock industrial plants in Europe in Barcelona, capable of manufacturing all types of trains. In addition, the factory in Trápaga (Basque Country) is one of the company's centres of excellence for traction and control systems supplied worldwide.

  • Signalling and Digital Mobility

    Alstom Spain employs over 800 technicians and engineers dedicated to the development and implementation of state of the art signalling and safety solutions for all types of railway infrastructure and rolling stock. The R&D laboratories located in Madrid develop digital solutions to respond to the mobility challenges of the 21 st century.

  • Services

    Alstom offers a variety of customised services to public and private operators. The objective is to guarantee optimised, safe and overall management of rolling stock and other railway equipment over their life cycle whether manufactured by Alstom or by third parties: maintenance, renovation, spare parts management, support and technical assistance. Alstom also has its own industrial sites in Pinto, for the repair of equipment and components, as well as for Digital Services activities.

  • Infrastructure and Systems

    The infrastructure unit provides turnkey projects, integrated systems and other infrastructure solutions such as: installation of track and electrification systems, maintenance workshops, electromechanical and tunnel safety systems, etc. Barcelona Tramway and APM at Adolfo Suárez airport in Madrid are examples of turnkey projects developed by Alstom’s teams in Spain.

  • Metro Barcelona

    Alstom manufactured 50 new metros for TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) at the Santa Perpètua site. Based on the Metropolis range, the new trains operate on driverless lines and meet the highest standards in terms of sustainability, passenger comfort, connectivity, and accessibility.

  • Metro Málaga

    Since its opening in 2014, Málaga Metro has used Alstom’s CBTC signalling, providing real‑time train tracking and boosting operations and capacity. Alstom also implemented CBTC on the recent network extension, connecting the underground system with the historic city centre.

  • Leading expertise in ERTMS

    Alstom signalling team in Spain have developed the ERTMS technologies for high-speed (Albacete-Alicante, Atlantic Corridor, Valladolid-Leon-Burgos & Extremadura corridor) and suburban networks (Madrid and Barcelona). Alstom's ETCS on-board solution is also equiped in 500 trains running in Spain (high-speed, regional, and suburban).

  • APM Madrid Barajas

    APM (Automated People Mover) integrated system for Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport. First 100% automatic system in Spain, that connects Terminal T4 with the satellite terminal (T4S) in Madrid Barajas. Alstom is in charge of the full system, including operation and maintenance services.

  • Metro Madrid: Propulsion and signalling

    50% of Madrid's Metro passengers currently travel under the supervision of signalling systems developed at Alstom sites in Spain. Alstom Spain has also been in charge of propulsion and control equipment for more than 650 Madrid Metro units (Series 2000-B, Series 5000 2nd and 4th and Series 6000).

  • Pioneers in high-speed

    Three decades ago, Alstom delivered Spain’s first high‑speed train. Since then, it has led major milestones, including Renfe’s lanzaderas, the first high‑speed train to cross the Pyrenees and run on both Spanish and French networks, and the first train in the liberalised market.

  • High-Capacity commuter trains for Renfe

    Alstom is manufacturing 201 high-capacity commuter trains for Renfe. The new units will carry 20% more passengers and feature an innovative mixed-configuration design, with single and double-decker cars, to meet the mobility needs of large cities, such as Madrid and Barcelona.

  • Innovation ERTMS project for low-density lines

    Adif has awarded Alstom a contract to develop a new ERTMS system application. The objective of this R&D&I project is to increase the safety and efficiency of low-density lines, introducing satellite technology and public telecommunication networks, among others, to real-time monitor the position of the trains.

  • Catenary-free technology in Barcelona's tramway connection

    La ATM de Barcelona adjudicó a Alstom la electrificación de la primera fase de la conexión del tranvía, que unirá Trambaix y Trambesòs con el sistema APS. Este sistema alimenta al tranvía mediante un carril conductor que se activa y desactiva automáticamente al paso del vehículo.

  • HealthHub™ and digital services

    The Alstom Services team in Spain implements digital maintenance tools, IoT technologies and predictive algorithms with the aim of improving train availability, reducing time spent in workshops and, in short, decreasing the total life cycle costs of urban and intercity fleets.

  • Traction systems

    At Trapaga industrial site, near Bilbao, Alstom develops traction, propulsion systems for all power types: from very high-speed, to regional and commuter trains, locomotives, metros or monorail.

  • Coradia regional trains for the connection to Barcelona airport

    FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) has awarded Alstom a contract to supply and maintain 10 new state-of-the-art Coradia Stream trains to serve the airport connection. The trains will be designed, manufactured, and maintained at Alstom's site in Barcelona.
