  • Community senior Elijah Shore has been named a finalist in the Washtenaw County Young Citizen of the Year scholarship contest. The awards are given to students who have done outstanding community service. Elijah's nominee said, "Elijah is a force of nature, and his many contributions are done quietly, unassumingly and with the deepest sense of purpose." Congratulations, Elijah!

  • The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association honored Ann Arbor Community High School Dean Marci Tuzinsky and Assistant Dean Rebecca Westrate as its 2019 Administrators of the Year! The award recognizes school administrators who have shown strong interest in and support for scholastic journalism. Thanks to the deans' support for our excellent journalism program, in which students produce the award-winning The Communicator online and in print.

  • We're so happy to announce that the Community High Jazz combo, Unified Field Theory, won a Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award in the High School Combo Contest. This was awarded in the biggest worldwide competition for high school jazz combos! Past Downbeat winners hailed from Los Angeles, New York, Denver, Seattle, Miami, and Berkeley, as well as from Israel, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Japan. The listing of the win is in the just-released June, 2019 issue of the magazine.
     
    Unified Field Theory Members are Aris Chalin (Piano, 11th Grade), Oliver Mayman (Drums, 12th Grade), Tim Kohn (Saxophones, 11th Grade), Jonah Eichner (Bass, 12th Grade), and Jake Lee (Trumpet, 11th Grade).

  • Congratulations to CHS sophomore Elizabeth Shaieb for winning first place in the Ann Arbor Optimist Club's annual Oratorical Competion! The contest, which was open to all Washtenaw students under age 19, asked participants to address the question, "Is there a fine line between optimism and reality?" Elizabeth will advance to the next level of competition. Great job, Elizabeth!

  • Congratulation to CHS robotics team Zebrotics 5708 for winning the Judges Award: Passion for Engineering at the March robotics competition, based on interviews the judges did with students. This is a prestigious award to win because the judges felt the team did something outstanding that was not included in the regular awards. The entire team contributed to obtaining this award, however, Ned Capuano, Giuliano Fonte-Basso, Elizabeth Plotner, and Lucas Reading-Sunol were the students interviewed by the judges. Way to represent, Zebras!

  • Congratulations to senior artist Chloe Di Blassio for placing in the top 18 high school artists in the state with her multimedia piece, "Strata." Her work will travel statewide for one year as part of the Governor's Traveling Show. This juried exhibition is sponsored by the Michigan Art Educators Association.

  • Congratulations to our homebuilding students who competed in the Skills USA Regional Carpentry Competition! They each represented the A2 Schools homebuilding program in a very professional manner. After a grueling five hour build, two of the three AAPS competitors earned spots at the State Carpentry competition.

  • Congratulations to senior Quincy Jenkins for receiving the Young Men of Promise award from the Delta Psi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority! The chapter's annual Celebration of Black Men recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of local Black men who have made significant contributions to our community in the arts, community service, education, and business/economics, and as trailblazers. The Young Men of Promise award is granted during the celebration to area high school Black male seniors who are nominated by their high school counselors in recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to the school community.
