Kano — The seven-man investigative committee set up by the Kano State House of Assembly to ascertain the authenticity or otherwise of the video clip portraying Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as allegedly collecting bribe from contractors has opted for a public hearing on the issue.

The allegation was contained in a video clip released by an online newspaper, Daily Nigeria.

The chairman of the committee, Baffa Danagundi, who led members to the Police Commissioner, Rabi'u Yusuf, explained that the committee had chosen to make the investigation open to enable members of the public know much about its activities.

He said: "We have decided to make our investigation open so that the general public will be convinced about the findings of the committee. We are at the police commissioner's office to seek his cooperation by providing us with adequate security during our sittings.

"We want you to provide adequate protection to members of the committee and all the witnesses that will be invited to testify before the committee. We don't want a situation whereby a member of the committee or witness will be humiliated or intimidated."

Danagundi said the committee would commence sitting next week, adding that civil society organisations, journalist and other stakeholders would be allowed to witness the sittings.

The police commissioner assured the committee of adequate security, saying "The committee is a welcome development because your duty is to checkmate the excesses of the executive arm of government. The allegation is heavy and it requires in-depth investigation to ascertain its authenticity or otherwise. So, it is necessary for you to give fair hearing to all parties involved. If you do that, your names would be written in gold."
