Zimbabwe: Annual ZRP Funfair Called Off Due to Cholera

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has called off its Commissioner General Funfairs which were scheduled for Bulawayo and Harare.

The Harare event was due to be held at Morris Depot in the capital last Friday while the Bulawayo funfair set for October 27.

Calling off the events, ZRP spokesman Paul Nyathi cited the cholera epidemic which has claimed more than 50 lives across the country.

"Our statement is very clear that we are postponing the funfair because of the directive from the government of banning all public gatherings to contain Cholera," said Nyathi.

Public gatherings were banned on September 12 as the government imposed a state of emergency in response to the cholera outbreak.

Officials said the ban which has also affected opposition political activities would remain in place until the epidemic is brought under control.

The ZRP will however, proceed with the Commissioner General's horse race which will be held at Harare's Borrowdale Race Course this weekend.
