The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating how Nairobi MCAs had reportedly turned foreign trips and training sessions into a gravy train in the past two years.

The commission is also investigating alleged procurement irregularities during renovation of the county assembly chambers.

EACC has already written a letter to the county assembly clerk, asking to be provided with documents on the trips and training seminars attended by MCAs and staff, both locally and abroad, during the financial years of 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019.

"The list should include countries and specific conference facilities visited and payments made to the MCAs and county assembly staff for the trips," read the letter dated September 14, 2018 and signed by Humphrey Mahiva, EACC's deputy director of investigations.

Also under investigation is the contract between Kensum Enterprises and the county for the renovation of the Assembly's chamber.

BREAKDOWN OF PAYMENTS

Eacc wants a breakdown of all payments made to the company, approved budget and procurement plan for the financial years 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. It also wants a list of pre-qualified suppliers and contractors during the three financial years.

This is the second letter by the EACC to the county assembly within a week. The first one dispatched on September 11 summoned 12 MCAs to appear before it over the fracas that preceded the ejection of Speaker Beatrice Elachi from her office.

The MCAs, however, failed to appear before the anti-graft agency saying that the summonses clashed with their retreat in Mombasa.
