Kenya: Senators to Grill Governors in First Uasin Gishu Sitting

Senators have summoned governors from the North Rift to appear before them when they hold their session in Eldoret next week.

Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis has been lined up to face Senate's County Public Accounts and Investments Committee chaired by Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang' on Monday. He will be answering questions on audit queries raised by the Auditor-General Edward Ouko.

His Uasin Gishu counterpart Jackson Mandago, will face the Finance and Budget Committee on Tuesday and share with the team what the county is doing on the 'Big Four' agenda.

Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos will face the same House team on Wednesday for similar questions. On Thursday, West-Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo will be before Mr Kajwang's committee to also respond to audit queries.

TOURISM POTENTIAL

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o is expected to appear before the same committee on Wednesday.

Uasin Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar, who on Monday held a meeting with Mr Mandago, County Speaker David Kiplagat and other county leaders said the sittings will be a perfect chance for the region to maximise its tourism potential.

"It will also gauge devolution successes and problems. We are privileged as a county to hold the Senate outside Nairobi. We look forward to fruitful deliberations," Senator Kamar said.

Mr Kiplagat said that they have put in place all the necessary plans and requirements to ensure the sessions become a success and the committees have enough space to discharge their mandate.

FACING PROBLEMS

He said it will be an opportunity for the MCAs from the region to make use of the event by interacting with the 67 senators and also making them understand the problems they are facing in the grassroots.

"This means a lot to Uasin Gishu County Assembly because it is the first time that the Senate is holding their business outside Nairobi," said Mr Kiplagat.

The weeklong programme will also see senators tour public facilities and projects including the Moi International Airport and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The Standing Committee on Health will visit West Pokot to address a petition on deteriorating healthcare in the county.

On Tuesday, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan said officers are ready to provide round-the-clock security to the lawmakers during the sittings.
