Zimbabwe: Air Force Officer Kills Colleague Over Child Paternity Claims

An Air Force of Zimbabwe officer has been arrested on allegations of murdering a colleague who allegedly claimed to have sired a child with his wife.

Taguma Chakanyuka (36) was hauled before Harare magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa facing allegations if murdering Constantine Tapiwa Mudanda of Manyame Airbase.

Chakanyuka was not asked to plead and he was ordered to apply for bail at the High Court.

He will be back in court on September 24 pending his trial.

According to the state, the incident occurred on September 7 2018.

It was further heard that on the day in question and at around 11pm at an unnamed bar in Manyame Airbase, the deceased started boasting that Chakanyuka was looking after his (Mudada) child.

Court heard the two then had a misunderstanding, but it was resolved when they were still in the bar.

It is alleged that, Mudanda started boasting again provoking Chakanyuka with the same issue.

This did not go down well with Chakanyuka who then started assaulting the deceased with open hands and booted feet.

Court heard a drunk Mudanda tried to flee the bar with Chakanyuka in hot pursuit.

It is alleged that Chakanyuka caught up with him and continued assaulting him until he fell unconscious.

Chakanyuka then left him in the dark and went home.

Mudanda was discovered by passers-by the following morning.

He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to a post-mortem, he succumbed to some head injuries.

Sebastian Mutizirwa appeared for the state.
