Mukono — Residents of Mukono on whose land the Mukono-Katosi-Nyenga Road was constructed, are demanding speedy compensation from government.
The residents have decried government's delay to compensate them. Some of the residents also said their properties were undervalued.
"Pay our money. You have broken our homes and shops but have not paid us. Who will feed our families and educate them? Where shall we sleep and work?" Mr Godfrey Musisi asked last week.
Mr Musisi said he has been battling with UNRA in court over payment for his half-acre land until court recently ruled in his favour but the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has not yet paid him. "Court ordered UNRA to pay me Shs400m but it has not paid me," Mr Musisi said.
The residents said they have been waiting to be compensated since 2011.
"We have lost our land, houses, building and business, but no money has come. The survey was carried out then when a bag of cement cost Shs15,000. But now it costs between Shs40,000 and Shs50,000 and this means by current prices of commodities we are already in loss. Let UNRA pay us and see how we restore our properties," the LC1 chairperson of Mulajje village in Nkokonjeru, Ms Edrisa Wamala, said.
Mr Sula Ssenoga, another resident, complained that his building was valued at Shs200 million, but he was only given Shs50 million. He said he is yet to recive the balance of Shs150 million.
"My building has been fetching me over Shs1 million, but now it is demolished. I want UNRA to pay me," Mr Ssenoga said.
However, the UNRA public relations officer, Mr Mark Ssali, said: "Mr Musisi's payment is being processed and money will reach his account soon and for the other project affected persons, we had run out of compensation money on this project by the third quarter. Fortunately we now have some funds and resumed payments last week."
