"Things are happening fast," says guitarist Dean DeLeo of the Stone Temple Pilots. Three years ago, the alternative-metal quartet was playing San Diego clubs under the moniker Mighty Joe Young. Now they're conquering the charts with their debut on Atlantic, Core, and their explosive indictment of date-rape, "Sex Type Thing," is all over MTV and radio playlists. The up-and-comers have even been in the odd position of turning down major gigs; they declined an opening slot on the summer Aerosmith tour because they felt the vet band's sex-rock image clashed with the Pilots' concern for women's issues.
