Mitt Romney lifted a cloud of despair hanging over Salt Lake City and its beleaguered Olympic committee yesterday by taking on the task of organizing the 2002 Winter Games - still three years away, but already rife with scandal.
"My goal is to make Utah proud, to make America proud," Romney said. Romney's comments brought tears to the eyes of some Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) members.
Gov. Michael Leavitt described the mood change following Romney's acceptance as "palpable."
"We're awfully glad to have him," Levitt said. "He's clearly a franchise player."
SLOC members unanimously endorsed the Belmont multimillionaire and one-time Senate candidate, making him president and chief executive. The SLOC's predecessor group, which was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to Utah, has been the focus of a widening bribery scandal. …
