Type Intelligent personal assistant

Google Assistant is an intelligent personal assistant developed by Google and announced at Google I/O May 2016. It is considered an extension of Google Now. Unlike Google Now, Google Assistant can engage in two-way conversations. The assistant is currently integrated in the Allo app only available in Preview Edition.[1] It is also integrated with the Google Pixel, currently the only Android phone to have it integrated into its software.[2] It will be included in Google Home, a smart voice-enabled wireless speaker, and proposed versions of Android Wear.

History[edit]

Around the time that Google Home was rumored in March and announced in May, Google announced Assistant along with various services, software, and apps. At the end of May, Google assigned Google Doodle leader Ryan Germick and hired former Pixar animator Emma Coats to develop "a little more of a personality."[3]

Interaction[edit]

Google Assistant, in the nature and manner of Google Now, can pull information, check weather, etc. Unlike its brethren however, it can engage in a two-way conversation, using Google's natural language processing algorithm.

Reception[edit]

PC World's Mark Hachman gave a favorable review of Google Assistant, saying that it was a "step up on Cortana and Siri".[4]

Integration into cell phone[edit]

On October 4, 2016 Google introduced its own line of smartphones with the Google Pixel. The device is based on Android 7.1 Nougat and includes Google Assistant.[5][6]
