BARRY GOLDWATER DID OF COURSE have a grandmother {20071, September 18}, my great-great-grandmother Sarah Nathan Goldwater. Born in England, she married "Big Mike" at the Great Synagogue in London on March 6, 1850. After their wedding, Big Mike went to California with his brother in search of opportunity. Sarah soon followed them in 1854 with her two small children (Morris and my great-grandmother Carrie) and her sister, crossing the Isthmus of Panama to get there.
Strong, independent-minded women are common among the Goldwaters. Sarah's first grandchild, my grandmother, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1900!
