Sominex is a trademarked name for an over the counter sleep aid.
Two formulations exist depending upon the market, in both cases a significant dose of a first generation antihistamine with hypnotic properties.
In the United States Sominex is marketed by Prestige Brands and has as active ingredient diphenhydramine.[1]
In the UK Actavis UK markets Promethazine hydrochloride under the Sominex brand.[2] Actavis also markets Sominex Herbal as a herbal sleep aid with three active ingredients: Hops, Valerian, and Passion Flower extracts.
[edit] In popular culture
Sominex is also the name of a song written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman for the hit musical Little Shop of Horrors. The song was not used in the film of the same name because Seymour and Audrey survive the plant's mischievous antics.[citation needed]
