The Oberlin Conservatory of Music is recognized as one of the foremost professional training institutions in the world and is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States. Graduates of Oberlin include many Grammy Award-winners and two Pulitzer Prize recipients, including George Walker, the first African American composer to win the award. Alumni, such as Denyce Graves, David Zinman, and Lisa Saffer, can be found in all major orchestras and opera companies in the United States and throughout the world. Graduates have also made broad contributions to advancing the field of music.

Accepting the 2009 National Medal of Arts on behalf of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music is Dean David Stull. He accepted the medal from President Barack Obama at an East Room ceremony at the White House on February 25, 2010. The National Medal of Arts is a presidential initiative managed by the National Endowment for the Arts and is the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence. Photo by Richard Frasier.
