SCH 23390 is a synthetic compound that acts as a D1 receptor antagonist and has either minimal or negligible effects on the D2 receptor. SCH 23390 is interesting because of its ability to offer significant protection from death in dextroamphetamine overdosage, without providing protection from methamphetamine overdose. Curiously, the compound provides slight protection from cocaine overdose. This strongly suggests that while d-amphetamine and methamphetamine may be similar at low doses, at higher doses they are in fact different drugs, exerting their effects through different mechanisms.[1]
